10 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Friday, October 7, 1988 HR0VATICH Obituaries Almanac Raymond W. Garbe, 82, leading hospital architect i i from Harvard in 1932. As an architect for the U.S. Department of the Interior from 1935 to 1937, he designed a hospital in Point Barrow, Alaska. He worked closely with the Bureau of Standards on research for construction material and methods to be used on the frozen tundra in the Arctic Circle.

In 1942, he joined the Chicago firm of Schmidt, Garden and Erikson. He worked designing hospitals for the firm, at the same time helping on the urban planning for the communities in which the facilities would be placed. He was made a partner in 1956 and continued with the firm until retiring in 1980. He and his wife, Ruth Moore Garbe, were deeply involved in the preservation of such Chicago architectural heritage as Navy Pier and the restoration of the Prairie Avenue District. She has also been a noted writer on anthropology and evolution.

Last year, he endowed a professorship in design at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, which is now held by Peter G. Row, professor of architecture and design. Survivors, besides his wife, include three sisters and a brother. By Kenan Heise Raymond W. Garbe, 82, a longtime Chicago architect, helped integrate modern medical science into the design of hospitals.

He was a leader in what has been termed "growth philosophy" for health-care facilities. Mass for Mr. Garbe, who had moved to San Francisco In 1985, was private. He died Saturday at home. In pioneering many innovations to medical construction and planning, he developed such now-accepted concepts as central service cores for nursing units and for surgical and X-ray departments.

He was also noted for the use of wide-span modular construction to achieve maximum flexibility of space. Among the area hospitals he designed are Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Sherman Hospital in Elgin and Bartholomew County Hospital in Columbus, Ind. Mr. Garbe, a native of Wheaton, received a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College and a master's in architecture from Harvard University in 1931. He was awarded the Nelson Robinson Traveling Fellowship Lois B.

Wilson, 97, founder of Al-Anon support groups Author Edgar Allen Poe died at age 40 in 1849. On Oct. 7, 1571, the combined fleets of the Holy League under John of Austria defeated the Turkish fleet off Lepanto. In 1765 the Stamp Act Congress convened in New York to draw up colonial grievances against Britain. In 1949 the German Democratic Republic was formed by East German Communists.

In 1954 Marian Anderson became the first black singer hired by the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York. In 1957 "American Bandstand," hosted by Dick Clark, made its network debut on ABC. In 1972 the Norwegian Cabinet resigned after voters rejected a proposal to join the European Common Market. In 1977 a new constitution for the Soviet Union was approved unanimously by the Supreme Soviet, or parliament. On the same day, Maryland Gov.

Marvin Mandel was stripped of his office and sentenced to four years in prison for fraud. In 1981 Egyptian Vice President Hosni Mubarak was nominated by parliament to succeed slain President Anwar Sadat. On the same day, Rep. John Jenret-te S.C.) was found guilty of bribery and conspiracy charges stemming from the FBI's Abscam investigation. In 1985 four Palestinian tenorists commandeered the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro with Sll passengers and crew off the coast of Egypt and threatened to blow it up unless Israel freed Palestinian prisoners.

She began to apply similar self-help principles to her own situation, sharing her experience with other relatives of alcoholics and holding informal meetings. "We did not discuss our alcoholic relatives, but tried to straighten out our own lives," she said. "This attitude became basic to Al-Anon." Al-Anon, which is similar to but separate from Alcoholics Anonymous, now has 30,000 groups in operation, including several thousand specifically for teenage children of alcoholics, according to an Al-Anon executive.

She estimated worldwide membership at about 500,000. Mrs. Wilson, who remained active in Al-Anon into the 1980s, left no immediate survivors. Goggins, 89 been personal secretary to Morton Barnard, a Loop attorney. She was also personal secretary to real estate magnate Arthur Rubloff.

Her first job in Chicago was as business secretary to socialite Mrs. Joseph G. Coleman. Later she worked with the Mark Willing estate, which then controlled the Auditorium Hotel. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She died at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, near her longtime home in Bedford Hills, N.Y. Known as Lois W. and as "the first lady of Al-Anon," Mrs. Wilson stayed with her alcoholic husband, William in the 1930s.

He stopped drinking, and in 1935 became a cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, now an international organization of more than 1.5 million members. Known as Bill he died in 1971. Mrs. Wilson said she became discontented with the amount of time her husband was spending with A.A. walking across the street against a red light.
