Tribune front page from Christmas Eve, 1968

The front page of the Chicago Tribune on Dec. 24, 1968, brought readers news of the first manned orbit of the moon on Apollo 8, the release of the crew of the USS Pueblo — who had been captured and tortured by North Korea — and of the raging war in Vietnam. The Apollo 8 journey produced the famous "Earthrise" photograph of our planet, taken by astronaut Bill Anders on Christmas Eve. Man would walk on the moon before Christmas 1969.
