ESCHBACH Eleanor Risteen Gordon, professor, poet, writer (7 Kappa, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was an instructor at UIC from 1975 to 1988. She then was an assistant professor for a year at the University of Nebraska. Mrs.

Gordon, who enjoyed widespread publication of her poetry, also wrote free-lance articles. Her 300 game was featured on Channel 7's sports news and in Chicago Magazine. A resident of Evanston, she died Wednesday of complications from lupus while visiting her physician's office. Mrs. Gordon's late father, Herbert Risteen, was one of the foremost crossword puzzle creators, contributing many of them to the pages of The New York Times. "She got her love of words from her father," said her husband, Henry. "She had an astounding IQ and could read a very complex book, talk and watch television at the same time.

She was so bright, but she was also so friendly. She had the same smile and appreciation for the woman mopping the floor as for the most prominent physician." Mayer, 83, played the oboe and the English horn for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1956. A resident of St. Petersburg, after retiring in 1976, he died March 9 in Metropolitan General Hospital in Clearwater, Fla.

Before joining the CSO, he was a member of the John Phillip Sousa Band and was its second oboist on the band's last tour. He also played with an orchestra for a radio station as well as with one in a movie palace. He was also a member of the Duluth Symphony Orchestra.
