Irrio. Uoyd Mandel Levbyah Funerals, 708-679-3939 Associated Press LOUISVILLE-William S. White, World War II correspondent, political reporter, columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, died Saturday. He was 88. He had been in failing health since a stroke about eight years ago, said his wife, June McConnell White.

Mr. White began his journalism career in the 1920s while a student at the University of Texas and joined The Associated Press at the age of 20. He covered Washington and World War II for the AP and then joined The New York Times in 1945. He was the Times' chief congressional correspondent in 1958 when he left to write a syndicated column. "The Taft Story," his biography of Robert A.

Taft, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. Taft, a Republican senator from Ohio, unsuccessfully sought his party's presidential nomination in 1952. "A newspaperman's life is a good career for the man who's really disinterested, whose aim is to explain facts, whose temperament is detached," Mr. White once said. As a reporter and a columnist, Mr.

White forged close ties to a succession of the country's most powerful leaders, including Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon. Mr. White met Johnson in the 1930s, and they became close friends. The day after President John Kennedy was assassinated, the newly sworn president invited his friend to dinner. "It was never necessary for him to see Lyndon," a press corps colleague once recalled.

"He always knew instinctively what Lyndon was thinking." Mary T. Condon Mary T. Condon, 49, a longtime teacher at the McPherson School, died recently in Ireland. Mrs. Condon was a resident of Chicago.
