Gerty He revolutionized state's Mental Health Department served there until 1941 and was able to upgrade the hospital so that the American Medical Association approved the training of psychiatric residents there. He also was past president of the Central Neuropsychiatric Association. Dr.

Gerty was a former professor and head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and held a similar position before that at Loyola University. He also was past director of the Psychiatric Division of the Neuropsychiatric Institute. He was past chairman of the Subcommittee for Psychiatry of the Dean's Committee of the Hines Veterans Hospital after World War n. Since 1964, he held various positions at HCA Riveredge Hospital in Forest Park. Dr.

Gerty, a native of Chicago, graduated from Chicago Teachers College and taught in the city's public schools before getting his medical degree at Loyola in 1921. Survivors include two sons, John and Frank two daughters, Mary Taylor and Helen Owens; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Elliston Funeral Home, 60 Grant Hinsdale. Mass for Dr.

Gerty will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 4920 Caroline Western Springs. Dr. Francis J.

Gerty in 1969 what became known as the "Illinois Plan" for the treatment of all in- and outpatients in community mental health centers. Dr. Gerty was the late Gov. Otto Kerner's first appointment and served 2V years as head of the Illinois Department of Public Welfare, the name of which subsequently was changed to the Illinois Department of Mental Health. While still in his 20s, Dr.

Gerty was appointed superintendent of the Cook County Psychopathic Hospital after being resident physician there in 1921 and 1922. They regularly gathered at his shop to converse about topics of the day: theater, city government, national politics, rearing children, the neighborhood and especially sports. Mr. Alexander, co-owner since 1972 of Old Towne Sundries in the Lincoln Hotel on Chicago's Near North Side, died Wednesday. A resident of McHenry, he was 48. Alexander's place of business dealt in newspapers, magazines, paperbacks, pop, sixpacks, aspirin, smokes, as well as conversation.

Gerty, 101, a psychiatrist and past president of the American Psychiatric Association, revolutionized mental health care in the state in the early 1960s as director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health. He switched the focus of state hospitals from custodial care to individualized treatment. A resident of Burr Ridge, he died Thursday in the King-Bruwaert House Inc.

In a Tribune article earlier this year, Dr. Harold Visotsky, Dr. Gerty's successor, described what the system had been like prior to his efforts: "I called all the hospital superintendents together and asked them what they were most proud of during their tenures.

Some said that none of the patients had ever escaped. One said he could feed his hospital on 50 cents per patient per day. And another one said he got really high production out of the patients who worked on the hospital farm. I was astounded." In contrast, under Dr. Gerty, patients started receiving treatment and many of them began getting better.

He pushed for more funds and better training for the department's hospital staff. In 1945, near the end of World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, marking the first use of nuclear weapons. (More than 71,000 people died on impact, 140,000 within five months.) In 1965 President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law.

In 1967 a state of emergency was lifted in the Detroit area two weeks after what was until then the bloodiest racial riot in U.S. history. In 1975 the United Nations Security Council refused to consider South Korea's application for UN membership. In 1978 Pope Paul VI died following a heart attack. He was 80.

In 1981, after a seven-week strike by their players, major-league baseball owners approved a plan to divide the season into halves. In 1985 major-league baseball players began a two-day strike. Rev. Eugene D. Gray, 71, pastor of the First Church of Deliverance, 4315 S. Wabash Chicago, had served as its minister since 1981 and had been associated with the church for more than 40 years. A resident of the Beverly neighborhood, he died at home Wednesday.

The church, founded in 1933 by the late Rev. Clarence H. Cobbs, is affiliated with the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ Inc. Rev. Gray succeeded Rev.

Cobbs as its pastor. A native of Jacksonville, El, he came to Chicago in 1939. A graduate of a cosmetology school, he worked for many years Veteran actor Bert Freed, 74, active in guild New York Times News Service VANCOUVER-Bert Freed, a character actor who appeared in "Detective Story," "Wild in the Streets," "Billy Jack" and about 75 other films, died Tuesday of a heart attack while vacationing in West Sechelt, British Columbia. Freed, who lived in Los Angeles, earned a bachelor's degree in theater from Pennsylvania State University and began his acting career in New York. He made his first Broadway appearance in "Johnny Two by Four" in 1942. His other theater credits include "One Touch of Venus" and "A Stone for Danny Fisher." Among his films are "Halls of Montezuma" (1950), "Where the Sidewalk Ends" (1950), "The Desperate Hours" (1955), "Fate Is the Hunter" (1964) and "Norma Rae" (1979). Freed served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild from 1969 to 1989 and was first vice president from 1975 to 1977.
