He was past chairman of the Subcommittee for Psychiatry of the Dean's Committee of the Hines Veterans Hospital after World War II. Since 1964, he held various positions at HCA Riveredge Hospital in Forest Park. Dr. Gerty, a native of Chicago, graduated from Chicago Teachers College and taught in the city's public schools before getting his medical degree at Loyola in 1921. Survivors include two sons, John and Frank two daughters, Mary Taylor and Helen Owens; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother.

They regularly gathered at his shop to converse about topics of the day: theater, city government, national politics, rearing children, the neighborhood and especially sports. Mr. Alexander, co-owner since 1972 of Old Towne Sundries in the Lincoln Hotel on Chicago's Near North Side, died Wednesday. A resident of McHenry, he was 48. Alexander's place of business dealt in newspapers, magazines, paperbacks, pop, sixpacks, aspirin, smokes, as well as conversation.

The conversationalists included police officers, salespersons, show business people, horse and lottery players, pen- sioners, reporters and sports fans from any walk of life. They loved to come in here and talk to him," said his partner, Lenny Giordano. "They talked every morning over rolls and coffee. They loved him." Mr. Alexander acquired his nickname as a die-hard Boilermaker fan, although he never attended Purdue University in Indiana.

His brother Bob recalls that when Purdue quarterback Mike Phipps failed to win the Heisman Trophy in 1969, "Charley sat down and wrote Phipps a letter, telling him how sorry he was." Bartlett Streamwood. South Side pastor Eugene Gray Rev. Eugene D. Gray, 71, pastor of the First Church of Deliverance, 4315 S. Wabash Chicago, had served as its minister since 1981 and had been associated with the church for more than 40 years.

A resident of the Beverly neighborhood, he died at home Wednesday. The church, founded in 1933 by the late Rev. Clarence H. Cobbs, is affiliated with the Metropolitan Spiritual Churches of Christ Inc. Rev.

Gray succeeded Rev. Cobbs as its pastor. A native of Jacksonville, he came to Chicago in 1939. A graduate of a cosmetology school, he worked for many years Veteran actor Bert Freed, 74, active in guild NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE VANCOUVER-Bert Freed, a character actor who appeared in "Detective Story," "Wild in the Streets," "Billy Jack" and about 75 other films, died Tuesday of a heart attack while vacationing in West Sechelt, British Columbia. He was 74.

Mr. Freed, who lived in Los Angeles, earned a bachelor's degree in theater from Pennsylvania State University and began his acting career in New York. He made his first Broadway appearance in "Johnny Two by Four" in 1942. His other theater credits include "One Touch of Venus" and "A Stone for Danny Fisher." Among his films are "Halls of Montezuma" (1950), "Where the Sidewalk Ends" (1950), "The Desperate Hours" (1955), "Fate Is the Hunter" (1964) and "Norma Rae" (1979). He also appeared in some 200 television shows.

Mr. Freed served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild from 1969 to 1989 and was first vice president from 1975 to 1977. In 1971, he ran unsuccessfully against John Gavin for the presidency of the union in its first contested election. He ran again in 1977, also unsuccessfully. as a beautician and later for Beverly Bank.

He joined the church choir in 1948 and shortly afterward was chosen as its president. He was ordained in 1956 and became pastor of the Children's Church, which is part of the First Church of Deliverance. In 1966, he was appointed national director of Junior Churches for the denomination. He continued to hold that position until his death. He had no immediate survivors.
