Meltzer, 'Golden Boy' screenwriter Associated Press ALBUQUERQUE Lewis Meltzer, a screenwriter whose credits included "Golden Boy" and "The Man With the Golden Arm," died of pneumonia Thursday.

He was 84. Mr. Meltzer was born in New York City to a show business family. His father, Isidor Meltzer, was a comedian in Yiddish theater. "He was always on the road with his father.

They traveled the circuit from New York to Philadelphia to Chicago," said his son, Joshua. Mr. Meltzer moved to Hollywood in 1938 at the request of director Rouben Mamoulian and worked for several studios over a 30-year career. He lost his eyesight about 10 years ago and moved to Albuquerque SV years ago, his son said. Besides "Golden Boy" (1939) and "Man With the Golden Arm" (1955), Mr.

Meltzer's screen-writing credits included "The Lady in Architect Francis Rew Stanton; was on zoning, transit panels Lewis Meltzer in 1990 Question" (1940), "Once Upon a Time" (1944), "Texas, Brooklyn and Heaven" (1948), "Along the Great Divide" (1950), "The Jazz Singer" (a 1952 remake starring Danny Thomas) and "Autumn Leaves" (1955). Mr. Meltzer's brother, who survives him, is character actor Sid Melton, who played Uncle Charley on "The Danny Thomas Show" and Alf Monroe on "Green Acres." Mr. Meltzer also is survived by his second wife, Diane; daughters Martha and Sarah Meltzer; sons Joshua and Nathaniel; and two grandchildren. chitectural SchooL He served from 1948 to 1954 as a member of the Yale University Council Subcommittee on Architecture, Painting and Sculpture.

He had been a student at North Shore Country Day School and served it in several capacities. In addition to being president of the board, he was past president of its alumni association and director of alumni giving. Mr. Stanton also taught a trimester course in architecture there for several years. Serving on the Winnetka Zoning Board for six years, he also was the village's first representative to the North Suburban Mass Transit District in the early 1970s.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Louise; a daughter, Suzanne; three sons, William, Campbell and Francis; and six grandchildren. Services will be private. He was active in community affairs and served as board president of North Shore Country Day School. A lifelong resident of Winnetka, he died at home Friday. A resident of River Grove, he died Monday in Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park. "He was a vital spoke in the wheel here," union president George Ossey said. "He was a man with an unfailing generosity, warmth of feeling and an ability to tell members and employers how it is. He knew what the working person thought and he had a tremendous desire to promote the interest of our members."
