Husar, 87, a prominent amateur athlete and Southwest Side community leader, died Saturday at Christ Hospital and Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Mr. Husar won seven letters at Purdue University in the early 1930s as a football, basketball and baseball player.

He went on to become a barnstorming basketball player with the Chicago Knights of Columbus league and later was an amateur baseball umpire and football referee. Mr. Husar was a precinct captain in the 23rd Ward during the 1950s and 1960s. He also worked for the City of Chicago as an air and water pollution control inspector for 25 years. In his Southwest Side community, Mr.

Husar was a founding member of St. Daniel the Prophet Church and was a leader of the Garfield Ridge Civic League for more than 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; five sons, John, who is the Tribune's outdoors columnist, Michael, Frederick, Matthew and Edward; one daughter, Jez Margaret; eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 9 p.m.

98th Oak Lawn. Lucille B. Chawk Lucille B. Chawk, 86, an engineer with Illinois Bell Telephone Co. and an elementary school teacher, died Thursday in her home in Oak Park.

Born in Chicago, Miss Chawk received two undergraduate degrees, one in education from Chicago Teachers College in 1929 and another in philosophy from De Paul Univer-' sity in 1932. While in school. Miss Chawk joined Illinois Bell in 1925, rising to become one of the first female engineers with the company before retiring in 1968. Afterward, Miss Chawk served as a teacher in the Chicago archdiocese system for eight years. She was a volunteer for many years at St Malachy's Church in Chicago and served with various Catholic organizations in the city, including The Cenacle retreat house and Helpers of the Holy Souls.

She was an active member of St. Catherine-St Lucy Church in Oak Park. She Is survived by two sisters. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at PM.

White, 1970s leader of Democrats New York Times News Service i WASHINGTON John C. White, a Texas sharecropper's son who became Democratic national chairman, died Friday in Georgetown University Hospital, where he had been under treatment for a heart ailment He was 70. Mr. White had a successful career in state politics before he was drawn to Washington. Along the way, he won the friendship of powerful older Texas Democrats like Lyndon Johnson and Rep.

Sam Rayburn, the longtime speaker of the house. Within the fractious state party, he gained a reputation as a conciliator. "He always took a position on one side or the other but without indulging in mean-spirited things or personal attacks," Robert Strauss, another Texan who became a national figure, said Friday. "He literally had no enemies." Strauss, who had served earlier as party chairman, endorsed Mr. White for the post in 1977.

Mr. White was chosen by President Jimmy Carter late that year and was elected by the national committee in January 1978. Frederick Schlink, consumer watchdog New York Times News Service' NEW YORK-Frederick Schlink, the Illinoisan who became a founding father of the American consumers movement and a best selling writer on consumerism, has died at age 103. He died last Sunday in Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg, N.J., said Peter Spencer, editor of Consumers' Research magazine. Mr.

Schlink was the co-founder, with Stuart Chase, of the Consumers' Club, which sought to protect the consumer by publicizing defective and unsafe products. The club started with 300 members in 1927. The two were co-authors that year of "Your Money's Worth," a buyers-beware book that inspired them to start the club. They incorporated the club as Consumers' Research Inc. in 1931, making it the nation's first independent organization to test consumer products and report on them by brand name.

Francis Pfrank J. Francis Pfrank, 72, of Schaumburg, a retired executive with Amsted Industries died Thursday, apparently of a heart attack. Mr. Pfrank retired in 1987 as the president of the former Plexco division of Amsted, a Fortune 500 company that manufactures products for railroads, industry and construction. Mr.

Pfrank was born in Terre Haute, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Rose-Hul-man Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1946, attaining the rank of captain.
