ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS -Marguerite Duras, one of France's most famed and prolific writers best known in recent years for her novel "The Lover" and the film based on it, died Sunday. She was 81. Ms. Duras, whose literary career spanned 50 years, died at her home in the Latin Quarter, according to parish authorities there.

Ms. Duras was born in Giadinh in former French Indochina, where her father was a mathematics professor. She went to high school in Saigon and the region inspired several of her novels, including "L'Amant," (The Lover). The 1984 book, which won France's top literary honor, the Prix Goncourt, is a moving and sensuous story about a 14-year-old girl from a poor French family in Indochina who becomes the mistress of a wealthy Indochinese notable's son. The story is partly autobiographical; as a young woman in Indochina, Ms.

Born in China, he was raised in Poland and had a long and often interrupted path to becoming a doctor. Dr. Poplawski began his medical studies in Lithuania in the early 1940s but left because of World War II. He served in the Polish army and then earned his first medical degree in Germany. That degree was not accepted when he immigrated to the United States, so he completed more residencies and earned another degree in 1952.

Dr. Poplawski practiced in Lansing from 1954 to 1973, and then moved to Michigan City. Dr. Poplawski is survived by his wife, Diana; two sons, Mark and Thomas; two daughters, Wanda and Alexandria Wallace; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
