of C. psychologist Israel Goldiamond By Kenan Heise TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Israel Goldiamond, 76, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Chicago, was a pioneer in the field of behavioral psychology and helped develop new and effective methods of altering harmful or problematic behaviors such as overeating, smoking, stuttering or panic. A resident of the Hyde Park neighborhood, he died at home Sunday. "He understood pathological behaviors to be modifiable by appropriate therapeutic interventions," recalled Harry Trosman, a professor of psychiatry at the U. of "and (he) used that information to develop systems of reinforcement that could encourage a patient to develop a better sense of self-awareness and self-control." Professor Goldiamond had "remarkable insights into human behavior" that enabled him to help patients modify their actions "in sensitively regulated incremental steps," Trosman said.

He was a leader in the experimental analysis of behavior, which is the meticulous study of it under carefully controlled labo- ALMANAC On Nov. 23, 1765, a court in Frederick County, repudiated the Stamp Act, the first such colonial action against Britain. He had them record every cigarette smoked -the time, what the person was doing, what preceded and what followed lighting up, and what the individual thought about the situation he or she was in at the time. U. of C. psychology professor Sebastian Grossman called him "one of the brightest people I have ever met" and "one of the most influential proponents of behavior analysis and modification." A native of Ukraine, he came to the U.S. as a child.

He graduated from Brooklyn College and earned his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the U. of C. in 1955. Professor Goldiamond was past president of the Association for Psychological Analysis.

After an automobile accident in 1970 left him paralyzed from the waist down, he served as chairman of an American Psychological Society task force to assist the disabled within the profession. Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Dr. Lisa Plymate and Shana Aucsmith; and a son, Joseph. There will be a memorial gath: ering in the Goldiamond apartment at 2 p.m. Friday.

Wabash was a survivor of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.

He met his future wife, Fritzi, there. A longtime resident of Evanston, he died Tuesday in the Hospice of the North Shore. Mr. Moldavan survived three years in several different concentration camps. He told his captors that he had been an engineer on trains and knew how to repair them.
