Interment St. Adalbert Cemetery. Thomas K. Moore Director, 312-842-0288. Edward Donnellan, 75, funeral director By Steven J.

Stark TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Edward J. Donnellan, 75, who helped develop Donnellan Family Funeral Services and served as a funeral director for 51 years, died Friday in his home in Kenilworth. At an early age, Mr. Donnellan began working for the funeral business founded by his father in the early 1900s. The firm has locations in Skokie and Evanston but until the 1960s served the South Shore and Beverly areas.

Mr. Donnellan held undertakers in the highest regard, and loathed anyone who made light of them. Treating the dead and their loved ones with respect was at the core of the family's work, said his wife, Grace Nora. "That was part of their mission early on," she said. "Every time you dealt with a family and the remains, you treated them with great respect.

They were dignified human beings. It was important to his father and important to him. He wanted to make sure Donnellan put a beautiful seal on someone's life." Mr. Donnellan took great pride in running a family business. His son Joseph Donnellan has been involved in the funeral service for 20 years and now runs it.

Other family members also work there. Even when he no longer ran the business, Mr. Donnellan showed up for funerals to keep an eye on how his son was handling things. Frequently, it was because he also deceased. "I don't think there are too many people on the North Shore who don't know Edward Donnellan," his wife said.

He was known as "Big Ed" because he stood 6 foot 5 and weighed up to 300 pounds. He wore size 15 shoes. Though imposing, Mr. Donnellan was mild-man'nered, sweet and kind, his wife said. "I don't care who you were, you were the same to him whether you had $70 million or swept the streets," she said.

Even when he was young, Mr. Donnellan was a man of girth. His wife recalled how her husband, when he was in college, had stayed out late one night. He came home to see his father wagging a finger at him and ready to chastise him. According to his wife, "He picked up his father, put him in bed, tucked him in, and said, 'It's all right, Dad, you never have to worry about And his father Edward J.

Donnellan laughed about it." Mr. Donnellan had been ill for some time and knew his life was coming to a close. He gave his family directions on how to run his funeral, Grace Donnellan said. "It was the calmest, most beautiful, tranquil, accepting death," she said. "His intimacy with death served him well.

He wasn't afraid of it." Outside the funeral business, Mr. Donnellan took great joy in golfing and being with friends and family. A fourth-generation Chicagoan, he first lived on Chicago's South Shore, then in Winnetka for 30 years and in Kenilworth for the past year. He graduated from Campion High School in Prairie du Chien, Wis. While attending Loyola University Chicago, Mr.

Donnellan enlisted in the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of sergeant and served as a military policeman in World War II. Other survivors include a son, Edward six daughters, Kathleen F. Lubawski, Paula J.
