Powers of Burr Ridge, a retired executive with Nalco Chemical Chicago, died Feb.

28 in his Scottsdale, home. He was 76. Before his retirement in 1984, Mr. Powers was president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Nalco. Joining the company as a sales representative in 1946, he rose through the ranks during a career that spanned nearly four decades.

"When he started with the company, he was crawling through boilers and testing water," said his daughter Susan Powers Faulkner. "It was your basic sales entry position that he turned into the American Dream." While Mr. Powers was chief executive officer, sales rose from $150 million to more than $600 million and the annual dividend rate per share increased more than fivefold. The company also became a major international supplier of specialized chemicals and technology, extending sales to new markets around the world, his daughter said. Nalco began development of business relations with China chiefly through the efforts of her father, she said.

"He helped build economic ties with China at a time when there was absolutely nothing in place," Faulkner said. After his retirement, Mr. Powers was also active in community affairs as well as in the business world. He was a trustee of Wabash College, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1943. He served as a trustee of George Williams College and the Glenwood School for Boys.

Mr. Powers was the director of AMSTED Industries AXIA Inc. and McGraw-Edison Co. He also helped foster the growth of the Nalco Foundation, which provides aid to charitable, educational, health and cultural programs. During the early 1980s, Mr.

Powers served on President Ronald Reagan's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control that helped study ways the government could save money.
