OBITUARIES Robert T. Powers, 76, retired Nalco executive By Joan Giangrasse Kates TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Robert T. Powers of Burr Ridge, a retired executive with Nalco Chemical Chicago, died Feb. 28 in his Scottsdale, home.

He was 76. Before his retirement in 1984, Mr. Powers was president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Nalco. Joining the company as a sales representative in 1946, he rose through the ranks during a career that spanned nearly four decades. "When he started with the company, he was crawling through boilers and testing water," said his daughter Susan Powers Faulkner.

"It was your basic sales entry position that he turned into the American Dream." While Mr. Powers was chief executive officer, sales rose from $150 million to more than $600 million and the annual dividend rate per share increased more than fivefold. The company also became a major international supplier of specialized chemicals and technology, extending sales to new markets around the world, his daughter said. Edward P. Janoski Edward P.

Janoski, 75, of Naperville, died Tuesday in his home. A former resident of Downers Grove, Mr. Janoski was a maintenance employee for the Chicago Board of Education. Survivors include two sons, Edward and James; four brothers; and a sister. Mass will 10 a.m.

Saturday in Divine Savior Catholic Church, 67th and Main Streets, Downers Grove. Ralph R. Hablutzel Ralph R. Hablutzel, 69, of Downers Grove, died Tuesday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Mr.

Hablutzel was an electronic technician with a telephone manufacturing company. Survivors include his wife, Joan; three sons, Steve, Allan and Carl; and eight grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Toon Funeral Home, 4920 Main Downer Grove. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Monday in the funeral home. Margaret W. Sloan Margaret W. Sloan, 94, of Carol Stream, died Sunday in the Johnson Health Center in Carol Stream. Mrs.

Sloan was a resident of the Windsor Park community in Carol Stream for the past eight years. She was a graduate of Cortland College and New York University. Mrs. Sloan taught school for 39 years, mostly in East Orange, Survivors 1 include a daughter, Doris Nicodemus; three sisters; and two grandsons. A private memorial service will be held in New York state.

Orril S. "Shorty" Anderson Orril S. "Shorty" Anderson, 48, of Lily Lake, died Thursday in his home. Mr. Anderson was a 1967 Geneva High School graduate.

"He helped build economic ties with China at a time when there was absolutely nothing in place," Faulkner said. After his retirement, Mr. Powers was also active in community affairs as well as in the business world, He was a trustee of Wabash College, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1943. He served as a trustee of George Williams College and the Glenwood School for Boys.

Mr. Powers was the director of AMSTED Industries AXIA Inc. and McGraw Co. He also helped foster the growth of the Nalco Foundation, which provides aid to charitable, educational, health and cultural programs. During the early 1980s, Mr.

Powers served on President Ronald Reagan's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control that helped study ways the government could save money. He wrote several articles advocating limited federal spending as a means wife, Mary; a son, Scott; a sister; and a granddaughter. Mr. Macko served in the Air Force for six years as a staff sergeant in Korea. He worked for Alumax in West Chicago for 40 years, until his retirement in 1994. After graduating from Geneva High School in 1963, Mr. Marberry entered the Air Force. While in the service, he continued his education at Eastern New Mexico University. In 1967, he received a bachelor's degree in marketing research from Northern Illinois University. After receiving his master's in business administration from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, he worked as the first marketing research analyst for Southwestern Electric Power Co.

in Shreveport, La. Later, he became the state director for muscular dystrophy in three states and served as their regional coordinator for two years. In 1973, he returned to Geneva to help with the family business, Marberry Cleaners. After moving to Houston in 1978, he opened and operated a maintenance business. Okayama grew up in California's San Fernando Valley. During World War II, she was interned by the U.S. government in Heart Mountain, Wyo. Mrs. Okayama moved to the Near North Side of Chicago in 1945.

She owned and operated a restaurant called the Coffee Mill on North Avenue. Mrs. Okayama She moved to Naperville in 1986. Survivors include three sons, Robert, Edward and Dennis; three daughters, Elizabeth, Margaret Saida and Jean Johnsen; four brothers; two sisters; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Mill Naperville, followed by a service at 6 p.m. Ruth Tilton Ruth Tilton, 72, a longtime Wheaton resident, died Thursday in her home after a long illness. Born in New York state, Mrs. Tilton moved to Chicago after graduating from Wheaton College to work in the editorial department of Scripture Press Publications.

She was also employed by the City of Wheaton and then later retired in 1988 from the headquarters office of Allied Van Lines. Survivors include her husband, Amos; a son, Mark; a daughter, Cheryl Ziegler; a brother; two sisters; and four grandchildren.
