Tennis great Helen Wills Moody, who won eight Wimbledon titles and was one of the premier figures in America's golden era of sports in the 1920s and '30s, has died.

She was 92. Ms. Moody, known as "Little Miss Poker Face" and "Queen Helen," won 31 major crowns-including seven U.S. singles championships and four French titles. She was known for hitting the ball harder than any woman she faced, and her trademark white eyeshade became an enduring tennis fad.

Known in recent years as Helen Wills Moody Roark, she died Thursday in Carmel Convalescent Hospital. She won her first U.S. women's tournament in 1923 and retired after winning the 1938 Wimbledon. She was 18-2 in singles matches at the Wightman Cup, a women's team event between Britain and the U.S. Her game drew her many admirers, including Charlie Chaplin, who, when asked to name the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, said: "The movement of Helen Wills playing tennis." Ms.

Moody played a power game, slamming forehand and backhand shots the full length of the court. Her serious demeanor led to her "poker-face" nickname. "She never showed any expression on the court. Nobody knew what she was thinking," said Margaret Osborne duPont, an International Tennis Hall of Famer and PLATT Sherwood "Que" Kellogg Piatt, 94, husband ol the late Dorothy Pickard Piatt; lather ol David S.K. Ms. Moody followed tennis closely in her later years, watching matches on television. "She admired Martina Navratil-ova greatly as a tennis player who broke her Wimbledon record," said Los Angeles tennis historian Jeanne Cherry. "I once asked her how she felt about Martina breaking her record. She said, 'Well, you know, she pumps Navratilova won, her ninth Wimbledon singles title in 1990.

Ms. Moody, a surgeon's daughter born in Centerville, learned the game without ever taking a lesson, picking it up from watching players at a local tennis club. "Children are great imitators," she said in a 1984 interview. "I watched the seniors play, and the visiting Australian champions." One year after she started playing at 14, she won the first of her two girls national crowns. She was just 17 in 1923, when she won the U.S.

women's singles championshipthe youngest champion at the time. She won an Olympic gold medal in Paris in 1924, the last time tennis was an Olympic sport until it returned at the 1988 Games in Seoul. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall in 1959 and was the 1935 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. Off the court and after she retired, she led a reclusive life, causing tennis great Alice Marble to dub her the "Greta Garbo of tennis." She wrote three books, including her autobiography "15-30: The briefly editor of a liberal magazine called Polity after becoming interested in politics while working on a New York City mayoral campaign. Her venture from party-girl to serious work captured the attention of the Chicago Tribune at the time.

"When a girl of the Gold Coast begins to use her smartly coif-fured head on such things as practical politics, liberal theories and government tonics, maybe the world is getting safer for democracy," the paper reported. Mrs. King moved on to write travel articles and book reviews for newspapers, but her defining mark wasn't ultimately in the publishing world, but in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1941, Miss Narcissa Swift married Clinton King, the son of a prominent Ft. Worth, Texas candy manufacturer.

King, who became an internationally known painter, settled with his new bride in Chicago, and the two soon became a high-powered socialite couple. In the 1960s, Mrs. King used her status to help attract some of Chicago's most prominent women to the cause of civil rights. In 1964, she helped found and became the first chairwoman of the Chicago Urban League's woman's board, an integrated group of about 60 women who advocated civil rights. It was the first such board in the country to gather African-American and white women together for such a cause.

Mrs. King was one of a handful of Chicago-area women to go to Selma, in 1965 to feed demon William R. Colby William R. Colby, 54, an employee of the Flex-O-Glass Co. on Chicago's North Side for 10 years, died Tuesday in West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park.

The same year, she divorced her first husband, Frederick Moody, and two years later married Irish polo player Aiden Roark.

Swift King strators helping Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. make his historic voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery. She later said the trip was "the greatest experience of my life." "I think that's what she was most proud of in her whole life," Thompson said. "She just felt it was the most worthwhile thing she could do." Back in Chicago, Mrs.

King also raised money for the movement by hosting galas for the city's elite. Meanwhile, her husband's painting career took off and he exhibited his works around the world. For many years, the King, spent much of their time on AstOf Street in Chicago and in houses in' Mexico and Paris. But shortly after her husband died in 1979, Mrs. King decided to move to Santa Fe.

She became active in the arts scene there and was on the board of trustees for the College of Santa Fe, the British-American Theater Institute and the Orchestra of Santa Fe. She also continued a dizzying pace of worldwide travel Longtime friends of Mrs. King cherished her fiery personality and great sense of humor. Josiah Brown, a Chicagoan who met the Kings in 1963, has kept a scrap-book of articles and remembrances of the couple. "There's going to be a big void in my life now," Brown said.

Mrs. King was the great-granddaughter of Gustavus F. Swift, founder of the Swift meat packing company. And in many ways, Mrs. King lived a life typical of a wealthy girl from a famous Chicago family.

She was a world traveler with houses around the globe, who loved yachting, mountain climbing, exquisite art and fine cuisine. But Mrs. King is also well-recognized for her work with the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s Chicago and for a gutsy, independent spirit that made her a unique character. "She led rather an F. Scott Fitzgerald sort of life," said her longtime friend from Santa Fe, Waite Thompson.

"She was kind of a holdover from a different era." Throughout her childhood and early married life, Mrs. King was a household name in Chicago's society pages. In 1933, she even made headlines for speeding. As a young girl, Mrs. King spent much of her time at the family's Lake Forest estate and at a boarding school in Connecticut.

She went on to Sarah Lawrence College and studied writing. In her early 20s, though, Mrs. King began to build a name of her own, while living on Chicago's Gold Coast. She was ALMANAC On Jan. 3, 1777, Gen.
