Conrad Schumann, 56, symbol of E. Berlin escapes ASSOCIATED PRESS INGOLSTADT, Germany--It is one of the best-known images of the Cold War: an East German soldier leaping to freedom over a tangle of barbed wire that soon would become the Berlin Wall. Thirty -seven years after his famous flight to the West, the former soldier, Conrad Schumann, 56, has committed suicide. His wife discovered his body Saturday hanging from a tree near their home in Kipfenberg, a village near this southern town. The reason for his suicide was not known.

Mr. Schumann fled East Berlin on Aug. 15, 1961, two days after East German leaders ordered construction of the Berlin Wall to prevent a hemorrhage of people fleeing the communist state. He was the first East German soldier or official to flee. The famous photograph captures the 19-year-old soldier, his head bowed, just as he clears the coil of barbed wire that served as temporary barrier before a concrete wall was built to replace it.

He is wearing a helmet and kneehigh boots and carrying his Years later, just after the wall was torn down, Mr. Schumann reflected on his dash. 4V "I will never forget those utes," he said during a television interview in 1989. Today, posters of the image are a best-selling item at the Berlin Wall museum, at the former Checkpoint Charlie border crossing. A month ago, Mr.

Schumann made an appearance at the museum to sign the poster. Mr. Schumann had said he fled to join family members who had already escaped to the West. He eventually settled in Kipfenberg, in the state of Bavaria, and worked as a machine operator.
