Secondo Tonoli, 91, waiter and gardener: By Diane Struzzi TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER In 1931, Secondo "Luigi" Tonoli came to the United States with a piece of his Italian heritage tucked in his heart-a love for people and an affable demeanor. He used those gifts to become a trusted waiter at several Italian restaurants in Chicago and earned a reputation as a man who took care of everybody. "That was his nature he inherited it from his said friend Joe Monastero, who owns Monastero's Ristorante, where Mr. Tonoli worked as a bartender and lunch waiter for about 10 years. "He had grown up in Italy where good food, song and beautiful relationships with people was a way of life," Monastero said.

"He was carrying on the same thing that he had adopted when he was a young Mr. Tonoli, 91, who often entertained customers with his singing, died Friday of colon cancer in his home on Chicago's North Side. He began his restaurant career as a teenager in Milan where he worked at coffee and dairy bars. But Mr. Tonoli yearned to come to the United States, a place that he always believed held great opportunity, even for people who were poor and had limited education, said his daughter Sylvia Goldsmith.

After arriving in the U.S., he landed a job at the Garden of Italy Restaurant, where he worked as a busboy and janitor. His first job as a waiter came in 1935 at the Como Inn on Chicago's Near North Side. Later he moved to Boveri's Restaurant in the Loop, where he regaled customers with stories from his youth, jokes and an occasional Italian song. For Mr. Tonoli, serving others was an art form that meant knowing what your customers wanted even before they asked for it.

He was a professional waiter who loved his craft, said friends and family. "He had that personal touch, he knew the customers, he knew their eating habits," said Ray Capitanini, owner of the Italian Village restaurants in the Loop, where Mr. Tonoli worked for more than a decade. "He would anticipate the customer's needs, he wouldn't just stand by and Secondo "'Luigi" Tonoli wait for a customer to raise his hand." Even after officially retiring, Mr. Tonoli couldn't stay away from his beloved career, working at Monastero's Ristorante at 3935 W.

Devon Ave. He had befriended Joe Monastero as a customer at the Italian Village and later worked for Monastero's restaurant on a part-time basis. hon "The thing that mostly came out of him in his late years was exactly the same thing that char: acterized him through his life--his youth and enthusiasm for life, his happiness for life," Monastero said. Mr. Tonoli embraced American culture, getting married on Flag Day and always ensuring that he cast his ballot during election time.

In 1933, he participated -in the Century of Progress World's Fair in Chicago, working waiter at the Italian Pavilion. All His life was marked by his love for people and respect for country, and the environment, said Goldsmith. In his back yard he nur-, tured a prize-winning vegetable, and flower garden, often comparing the tomatoes he had grown with his friends'. His garden featured only red-and-white flowers and placed in several citywide best-gardening contests, said Goldsmith. 115 "He loved the people, that was what kept him going," she said.

"He always talked about that he had the best career." He is also survived by his wife; Adalgisa; another daughter, San. dra Glunz; six grandchildren and: four great-grandchildren. A0 funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in Mary Seat of Wisdom Catholic Church, 920 Granville Park Ridge. William J.
