By Howard Reich Tribune Arts Critic Saxophonist Benny Waters, who at 96 was possibly the world's oldest working jazz musician, died Tuesday morning at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md. Though his robust saxophone tone and extroverted vocals seemed to defy the passage of time, Mr. Waters never made a fuss over being senior to esteemed jazz nonagenarians such as reed-ist Benny Carter and violinist Claude Williams. "I guess it's an honor to be the oldest jazz musician, but that isn't the most important thing," Mr.

Waters told the Tribune in March. "The most important thing is how well I play, and I leave it to the public to judge that. I can tell you that every place I've played recently L.A., Tokyo, Sacra-' mento I've had standing ova- tions." More important, the crowds were not simply cheering Mr. Waters' exalted age but also his enduring powers as jazz impro-viser and stage entertainer. His last Chicago performance, at the Jazz Showcase in April, proved that his technique and tone quality remained at a remarkably high level.

He was unhindered artistically by the loss of his vision three years ago, after a cataract operation. In concert and on record, Mr. Waters' art represented an idealized version of 1930s jazz performance style. The outsize vibrato, ripe tone, slides between pitches and high-register rasps and squeals epitomized an earlier approach to jazz reed playing. Though these expressive devices might have sounded anachronistic or quaint in the hands of younger players, for Mr.

Waters studied at Boston Conservatory before pursuing a life in jazz. His versatility as an ensemble musician earned him jobs with Joe "King" Oliver, Fletcher Henderson and Jimmie Lunceford, three key architects of the language of big-band swing. Mr. Waters' influence in jazz 1 was wider than some listeners may have realized, for he taught two important reedists who helped define the sound of various incarnations of Duke Ellington's band: baritone player Harry Carney and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. In the early 1950s, Mr.

Waters settled in France, where he lived for four decades before returning to the U.S. in 1992. In 1997 he appeared with the Statesmen of Jazz in Tokyo and released his final recording, "Benny Waters Birdland Birthday: Live at 95" (on Enja). He last played in public two months ago in Manhattan. Mr.

He was 96 years old. Fred was born in Chicago in 1902 At the age of 15, he began his career as an office boy al the Alhert Pick Company in Chicago. In 1942, he left to join thefiexall Drug Company as a Vice President. In 1951, he founded Fred Schmid Associates in Los Angeles, which grew to be a nationally recognized restaurant design firm. In 1955.

he helped form the Food Facilities Consulting Society, which evolved into an international organization He married the late Evelyn Oftedahl of Chicago in 1926 and had two children, Robert Schmid and the late Jayne (John) de Ruyter, Evelyn died in 1961. In 1975, he married the late Lorice McCauley of Saginaw, Michigan and rosided in Scottsdaio, Arizona. He is survived by his son, Robert (Evelyn) Schmid; sister.
