To place your Dedication Announcement, (312) 222-22221 Bob O'Connor, 59; owned automobile dealerships By Karen Craven TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER "If anyone can, O'Connor can." Bob O'Connor coined the phrase. It was 21 years ago when Mr. O'Connor started Bob O'Connor Ford at 92nd Street and Western Avenue and almost went broke. "He the chief cook and bottle washer," said his son, Timothy O'Connor. "He drove a used car for years." His father started when inflation was at an all-time high, interest rates were at 22 percent, and he hustled to stay afloat as he watched other dealerships go under, he said.

Mr. O'Connor, 59, died of cancer Thursday in his Palos Heights home. Mr. O'Connor was one of five children and grew up in the Brighton Park neighborhood. A graduate of De La Salle High School, he opted for the car business instead of the Chicago Police Department, which his brothers had joined.

"He wanted to be his own boss and grab that ring," his son said. After working in finance and sales at Smith Chevrolet in Hammond, for several years, he started his own business. In 1986, he expanded the dealership into Evergreen Park at 2601 W. 95th St. It was around that time "Katie O'Connor" became a household name through TV commercials.

The woman who had the same name as Mr. O'Connor's daughter, soon was known for the line "If anyone can, O'Connor can." While she remained the spokeswoman for many years, in the early 1990s, Mr. O'Connor's daughter took over. Timothy said the same name was really just a coincidence. "He wanted someone like Shelley Long in the Homemakers commercials," said Timothy.

"It just so happened that that was her legal name." Although Bob O'Connor Ford was sold recently, the company still has two dealerships: Quality Hyundai at 9205 S. Western Ave. and O'Connor Chevrolet at 127th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Alsip. He was a member of the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, National Automobile Dealers Association, the Illinois Automobile Dealers Association and many other local civic groups. Mr.

O'Connor and his wife of 33 years, Caryl, raised their family first in the Scottsdale neighborhood and then in Palos Heights. In addition to Caryl and Timothy, Mr. O'Connor is survived by three sons, Michael, Robert and Sean; two daughters, Kathryn O'Connor-Ippolito and Courtney O'Connor-Twomey; three brothers, Thomas, Terrence and Jack a sister, Patricia; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 9 p.m.

Henry Jones, 86, Tony-winning character actor from stage, screen NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE chotic child played by Patty LOS ANGELES -Henry Jones, a Tony-winning character actor who had a long career on Broadway, in films and on television, died Monday in UCLA Medical Center. He was 86 and lived in Santa Monica, Calif. Mr. Jones had a face as plain as his name.

As his daughter, Jocelyn Jones Watkins, said Wednesday, "He looked like the everyday man, the guy next door." He blended into his roles as doctors, ministers, judges, janitors and sometimes murderers. Often his character was that of a mildmannered man with a secret, the worm who turned; frequently that turn was toward the sinister. Although he was known for being reliable and highly professional, he could be overlooked, a member of a supporting cast. But when given the opportunity, he delivered memorable performances. Two of his most acclaimed stage appearances were in long-running Broadway shows in the 1950s.
