Lloyd Mandel Levayah Funerals, 847-679-3939 or 888-LEVAYAH or www.levayah.com Richard Kleindienst, chief Nixon adviser ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOENIX--Richard Kleindienst, who served as U.S. attorney general in the Nixon administration and resigned during the Watergate scandal, died of lung cancer Thursday.

He was 76. He died in his home in Prescott, after battling cancer for years, said his wife, Margaret. Mr. Kleindienst had assisted with Richard Nixon's presidential campaign in 1968, then stayed on as deputy attorney general, eventually replacing John Mitchell, who resigned as attorney general in 1972 to head the Committee to Reelect the President, the organization at the heart of Watergate. He took the oath as attorney general in June 1972.

Five days later came the break-in at the Democratic Party headquarters in Washington's Watergate complex, a botched bugging attempt that sent some top Nixon aides to prison and eventually forced Nixon to resign. Although Mr. Kleindienst remained an avid supporter of Nixon, he told The Arizona Republic in a 1997 interview that the president's feelings of bitterness might have contributed to the scandal: "His desire for revenge and retribution was his great limitation." Watergate changed Mr. Kleindienst's life. Amid allegations that White House staffers were trying to obstruct justice, he stepped down in April 1973 along with aides H.R.

Haldeman and John Ehrlichman and White House counsel John Dean. "It just got so bad. I was just neutered," he told the Republic. Mr. Kleindienst never spoke to Nixon again.

He pleaded guilty in 1974-an act he said he regrets- -to a misdemeanor charge for failing to fully testify at his Senate confirmation hearing about the so-called ITT affair, a major scandal that came shortly before the Watergate break-in. The Justice Department had filed an antitrust suit against Richard Kleindienst in 1972 International Telephone and Telegraph Co. in 1971. Mr. Kleindienst was charged with failing to tell the Senate that Nixon had ordered him to drop the suit against The president rescinded the order two days later, after Mr.

Kleindienst threatened to resign. The case was settled out of court. Mr. Kleindienst was. sentenced to 30 days and a $100 fine, but the sentence and fine were suspended.

He eventually moved to Tucson to continue his law practice, then to Prescott in 1994, where he continued to practice law until his death, his wife said. Mr. Kleindienst, a native of Winslow, attended the University of Arizona until his sophomore year, when he was sent to Italy to serve in World War II. He finished at Harvard College, graduating with a B.A. degree in 1947.

In 1953, he became the youngest member of the Arizona House. A member of a group of Sen. Barry Goldwater's supporters known as the "Arizona Mafia," he became national director of field operations of the Goldwater for President Committee. After helping win Goldwater's nomination in 1964, he resigned from the senator's staff to mount his own campaign for the Arizona governorship but was defeated by Democrat Sam Goddard. Des Renford, 72, who swam English Channel 19 times NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE SYDNEY-Des Renford, who began marathon swimming at age of 39 and went on to swim the English Channel in each of his 19 attempts, has died at 72.

Mr. Renford, who died Dec. 31 of a heart attack while swimming in his local pool in Sydney, was a butcher, a barkeeper, a bookmaker and a minor local politician, but he is remembered for his duels with the Channel. The challenge transcends the 20 miles separating Dover and the Cap Gris Nez beach in France. It also is the cold, foul weather and the unremitting loneliness.

Channel swimmers never forget the words of the first successful Channel swimmer, Matthew Webb, who completed the ordeal in 1875: "Nothing great is easy." His rivalry with two Britons, Murphy and Mike Read, became part of the folklore of the sport. In 1977, Mr. Renford and Murphy agreed to three races against one another. Murphy won the first, 10 miles in shark cages in Sydney Harbor. Mr.

Renford won the second, a Channel crossing. On the last race, the 25-mile length of Loch Ness, where the temperature was at times near freezing, Mr. Renford was pulled unconscious from the water after hours and put in intensive care. Murphy went on for another hours, but he also failed to complete the course. "We agreed on an honorable draw," Murphy recalled.
