Sister Joanne Mullee, lifelong teacher Karen Craven TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Sister Joanne Mullee, BVM, 67, who spent 38 years teaching in Chicago-area Catholic schools, died Thursday. Sister Joanne had spent the last month teaching students in Ecuador. Last week, she had taken a tour of the Galapagos Islands and suffered a heart attack. Sister Mary Alma Sullivan accompanied Sister Joanne on the trip. She sent out a letter to members of the Sisters of Charity Order in which she explained that Sister Joanne's last days on the Galapagos were blissful.

Sister Mary Alma wrote of how Sister Joanne was amazed by the sights and sounds of the birds, amphibians and mammals on the islands, and she spent her time photographing all the "little miracles of God's creation." Because of the surroundings, Sister Mary Alma wrote: "It would be disingenuous for me to be sad for Jo. The place in which she died was exquisitely beautiful. It was a lovely day. There was an abundance of God's creatures near at hand I believe that, even in what proved to be her last conscious moments, her thoughts were of life and not death. That was the Jo Mullee I grew to know and love." She most recently resided with members of her order in Oak Sister Joanne Mullee Park.

A native of the Bridgeport neighborhood, Sister Joanne was one of eight children. She attended St. Bridget's, where years later she would serve as principal. As a child, Sister Joanne was an athlete, and the neighborhood boys would fight to make sure that she was on their football team, said her sister, Rosemary McNichols. As Sister Joanne approached her senior year at St.

Mary's High School, she had originally planned to attend college, but just before graduation, she changed her mind, said McNichols. "There were eight other girls from her class who were entering the order and she decided to join Maxine Carlson, mother and hospital volunteer By Karen Craven TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER Maxine Carlson liked nothing better than to give to others. When her children surprised her with a party for her 40th wedding anniversary, she turned around and planned another party, making them the guests of honor, and eventually she showed them the world. "She felt so grateful, she wanted to reward everybody," said her daughter Claudette Ohsann. Mrs.

Carlson died in a car accident Saturday on the way home from a family reunion in Wisconsin. In 1987, Mrs. Carlson took her entire family, grandchildren and all, on a cruise. The trip was so successful that it became an annual event. The family later took cruises of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii and St.

Lawrence Seaway. "She was the matriarch of our family. She was the planner, the doer and nothing would have been done without her," said Ohsann. A native. of Geinberg, Austria, Mrs.

Carlson moved to the United States after she met Raymond Carlson who was deployed in them," McNichols said. "It was really quite a surprise to the family." Sister Joanne entered the Sisters of Charity, BVM in 1949. She professed her first vows in 1952 and final vows in 1957. Sister Joanne spent 38 years teaching in Chicago Catholic schools: St. Francis Borgia; Our Lady Help of Christians; St.

Callistus; St. Bridget; and Holy Family. Sister Joanne also taught in California, Montana, New York and Germany, her sister said. When she was assigned to teach at St. Bridget's in the 1960s, she was very excited to be back in her neighborhood, said McNichols.

"She was teaching her friends' children," McNichols said. Sister Joanne traveled often, enjoyed horticulture and loved to swim. "She enjoyed every minute of her short life," McNichols said. Sister Joanne also is survived by two brothers, Francis and William Mullee; many nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Charity, BVM. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m.
