They divorced in 1954.

In 1956 she married Paul Harper, an executive at Leo Burnett. Together, they traveled to India, Africa and Europe. After his death in 1966, Mrs. Harper got a master's in art history from Northwestern University and established an international studies program for the art school at Lake Forest College. In her 70s, she visited Antarctica, the Galapagos and the Marquesas Islands; one of her last trips was to central Alaska.

Besides her son, Mrs. Harper is also survived by a daughter, Alicia R. Hendrix; another son, David RD. Magnuson; six four great-grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m.

When he told her to broaden her interests, the advice fell on fertile ground. After her 1933 graduation from the University of Chicago, Mrs. Harper signed on as a courier for the Frontier Nursing Service.

That job lasted just two months. Mrs. Harper spent most of that time on horseback, a lean, leather-booted figure in denim who rode her way through 750 square miles of rugged and trackless southeastern Kentucky hill country.
