(2 Interment Wednesday Assoc in the 847-537-6600 FISCHER FOX A wanderlust in his heart, Richard Joseph Pirhofer longed for years to see the places he enjoyed hearing about from business associates across the country. Soon after having heart surgery, Mr. Pirhofer decided life was too short not to satisfy his travel desire. He crisscrossed the country in a motor home for five years and used a motorcycle to make side trips. His travels, which he documented for friends and family with three-page monthly newsletters, took him to Canada and every state in the United States except Hawaii and Alaska.

His letters earned him the nickname "The Bard," which was also on his license plate. "In his business travels, he saw all the things the world could offer and he just wanted to see it more. It was a constant search for knowledge and a curiosity," said his son Alan. "He always said, 'Just keep learning and have a passion for life and what it has to Mr. Pirhofer, 65, died Wednesday, March 1, of congestive heart failure in his Clearwater, home.

Born and raised in Chicago, Mr. Pirhofer graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering and earned a master of business administration from the University of Chicago. He worked for more than 10 years in the international sales department of Miehle-Goss-Dexter a printing machine manufacturer in Chicago. After becoming an independent marketing consultant for Star Chemical Co. in Hinsdale, Mr.

Pirhofer moved to Seattle to work as a sales and marketing engineering consultant for Web Press, his son said. While in Seattle, he also had a side job as a private investigator of corporate espionage. In one venture, when he was investigating a company accused of stealing another's trade secrets, Mr. Pirhofer's left ear was grazed by a bullet. The person arrested for shooting him allegedly worked for the company Mr.

Pirhofer was investigating, his son said. Mr. Pirhofer lived by a strict business philosophy based on fairness. "You've got to be fair and honest with everybody, and you'll succeed no matter what you do," his son said. "He would walk away from any business deal that was not fair and honest." Mr.

Pirhofer moved to Florida in 1992, when he began to travel. He never stayed in trailer parks, preferring to rest in national parks or camps so he could be closer to nature. And close he came, even encountering a bison that blocked his path during one trip to Yellowstone. "There was a standoff. They were both too stubborn to his son said.

About 20 minutes later, the bison gave up. "He looked at him, nodded his head and they parted ways," Mr. Pirhofer's son said. An internship at Ford Motor Co. sparked Mr.

Pirhofer's lifelong passion for cars. The owner of eight cars at one point in his life, Mr. Pirhofer owned one of the few 1968 Ford Torino GT convertibles ever made, and he later restored a 1967 Lincoln Continental, his son said. In addition to his son, Mr. Pirhofer is survived by another son, Adam; and his ex-wife, Arlene Mecko, with whom he remained friends.
