To place an advertisement for your funeral home or related service please contact Jennie Kaye at 312-222-4070 Chicago Tribune chicagotribune.com Wheaton's Aileen Hawley, 45, a former missionary By Joan Giangrasse Kates TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER In a story that appeared in the Tribune in May focusing on Wheaton resident Aileen Hawley and the outpouring of support she received from the community after her leg had been amputated, the cancer victim was quoted as saying, "I want to see my boys grow up, and losing a leg is secondary to being a mother.

I am more than just a A friend of Mrs. Hawley's stated in the article that the former owner and operator of the Wheaton Bagel Shoppe was only "seeing the return" for all the kindnesses she had shown others during her lifetime. The group, known as Friends of Aileen Hawley, raised money to help pay medical bills and other related expenses incurred by the family. Mrs. Hawley, 45, a local school volunteer, who along with her husband, Dwight, served as a missionary in Vienna, Austria and Thailand in the 1980s, died day, Dec.

27, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Her medical problems began in May 1997 when she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. After undergoing chemotherapy every three weeks until the end of the summer, she finally succumbed to the disease that required the amputation of her left leg and half of her pelvis. A member of the Wheaton Bible Church, Mrs. Hawley's missionary work began in 1980, when she and her husband traveled to Thailand with the World Relief organization.

The couple also ministered from 1987 to 1989 in Vienna, Austria, through the Slavic Gospel Association. According to the article, when Mrs. Hawley bought the Wheaton Bagel Shoppe in 1996, it represented a ministry for her, since she viewed it as "a way to reach out to others." She was also a volunteer with the Hawthorne School PTA, Pioneer Clubs and the Christian Service Brigade. Other survivors include two sons, David and Jonathan; her mother, Eleanor Moore; two brothers, Albert and Tony Moore; and a sister, Viola Brickhouse. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Thursday in Wheaton Bible Church, at Main and Franklin Streets, Wheaton. Hinsdale civic leader John Graham, 86 By Joan Giangrasse Kates TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER John D. Graham, 86, a longtime Hinsdale resident and civic leader, died Monday, Dec. 27, at the Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove. Born in Riverside, Mr.

Graham moved to Rock Island at the age of 9. He graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1935, majoring in chemistry. That same year, he began working for International Harvester in Rock Island, and remained with the company until he retired in 1978 as director of engineering research. Mr.

Graham was very active in Carolyn J. Ellenwood Carolyn J. Ellenwood, 71, of Glendale Heights, died Sunday, Dec. 26, in the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton. Mrs.

Ellenwood was a homemaker. She is survived by five sons, Philip, Donald, David, Neal and Roger; five daughters, Barbara, Claudia Cavicchioni, Cindy, Susan and Lori; a sister, Betty Lou Henschen; 20 grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Cypress Funeral Home, 1698 N. Bloomingdale Glendale Heights.

Leta K. Mitchell Leta K. Mitchell, 92, of Portage, formerly of Itasca, died Monday, Dec. 27, in Valparaiso, Ind. Mrs.

Mitchell attended Drake and Northwestern Universities, and had served as a volunteer at and honored by many technical societies and boards. His membership includes the American Society of Metal, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American National Standards Review Board. He received a 1981 William Hunt Eisenman Award and received a certificate of appreciation from Gear Research Institute. Mr. Graham held four heating patents through International Harvester.

He was also a computer consultant with Dynamic Data where he helped run a nationwide banking on-line network called Inner Line. Hines Hospital in Chicago during World War II. Survivors include a son, William; a daughter, Kathleen; and a brother, Gordon King. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday in the mausoleum chapel of Roselawn Memory Gardens in Lake Geneva, Wis.

Guy Pugh Vance Jr. Guy Pugh Vance 84, of Bata- via died in Lansing, while on a trip Thursday, Dec. 23. Mr. Vance attended high school in Decatur, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1932.

After basic training, he served a full tour of duty in Shanghai, China. During World War II, he was a drill sergeant in Parris Island, S.C. He was discharged in 1944. A leader in the Masonic fraternity. he was a member of Bloomington Masonic Lodge No.

43 and passed to the degree of fellowcraft and A resident of Hinsdale since 1955, Mr. Graham served on the Village Board for three years. He was a member of the Union Church of Hinsdale, where he sang in the choir for more than 40 years and presided over several church boards. He was also the president and chairman of The Chicago String Ensemble from 1982 to 1986. Survivors include his wife, Floryn; a son, Philip; a daughter, Virginia; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield Hinsdale. Aileen Hawley master mason.

He was a grand lecturer, past grand lodge instructor, past senior grand deacon of the grand lodge and installed many masters throughout the state. Mr. Vance belonged to the Valley of the Bloomington Scottish Rite, the Tebala Shriners of Rockford, the Ancient Craft Degree Team of the Chicago Scottish Rite and was a past patron 0' Fox Valley Chapter No. 265 of th Order of the Eastern Star. Mi Vance is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eva Mae; a son, Richard; a daughter, Jacqueline; a sister, Dorothy Jobe; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
