JOHN EVANS. Ways of curing the colossal frivolity" of the American university were outlined yesterday before the Northwestern university chapter of the Association of University Frofessors by Dr. Robert M. Hutchins, president of the University of Chicago. He spoke in the First Methodist church, Evanston.

First on the list of changes proposed by Dr. Hutchins was the abolition of football, which he described as "the chief symbol of frivolity." In addition, he advocated abolition of "obstacles to education," such as "the adding machine" system of summing up credits supposed to amount to an education, and "excess" of the departmental system.
