Leonard Bartholomew's photograph of a young iniliing machine operator in a war plant was adjudged first place winner yesterday in the second annual exhibit of the Chicago Press Photographers association on the mezzanine floor of the Stevens hotel. The picture was captioned, "A Helping Hand." Capt. Bartholomew is a staff photographer of The Chicago Tribune, on leave while serving in the army.

Jack Lembeck won second 'place for his picture, "Bomber Meets Waterloo," and Sid Samuels received third award for "Army Meets Navy." Selections were made by Victor A. Irvine, sales promotion manager for Motorola Radio company which donated prizes of $100 worth of war bonds. The first prize was a $50 bond and second and third $25 bonds each. The 13 acre estate of the late Miss Mary Virginia McCormick of Chicago, a $1,750,000 property at Pacific Palisades near Santa Monica, was -taken over today by the war shipping administration as a rest center for merchant seamen.

Possession was assumed upon the filing in United States District court of condemnation proceedings to obtain a lease on the property for the duration of the war plus one year. Under the provisions of the war powers act, the government can take possession of property upon the filing of such' proceedings. The property, which has been vacant since Miss McCormick's death nearly three years ago, includes a group of spacious Mediterranean type buildings overlooking the Pacific ocean. Miss McCormick, who was 80 when she died May 24, 1941. left an estate estimated at nearly 20 million dollars.
