Raissa Irene Berk-man Browder, 58, wife of Earl Browder, former head of the Communist party in the United States, died at her home here today after a long illness. A native of Russia, she met and married Browder in Moscow in 1926 and came to the United States seven years later. In 1940 a warrant was issued for her deportation on the ground she had entered the country illegally. In 1944 she was permitted to depart the country voluntarily to reenter it legally as a quota immigrant with a Russian passport After she and Browder denied under oath in 1949 that she had ever been a member of the Communist party, both were indicted for perjury. She later won a severance because of illness; Browder has not yet been tried.
