BURKE MOTORS Ed Sullivan presents chapter St of dizing or discoloring. OUR SHOW ROOM OPEN SUNDAY 10:00 to 5 P.M. THE COLE I'ORTER STORV Sixty minutes of TVCODEGALLS FOR MODERATION IN COMMERCIALS Good Taste and Courtesy Are Requisites BY LARRY WOLTERS Red Skelton stirred up quite a ommotion among viewers 1hru lis recent appeal on his own show for courteous consideration of sponsors' commercials. We have received numerous letters filled with gripes about the length, repe-titiousness, extravagant claims, and bad taste in television advertising. While there is much dc-corus, sensible, and persuasive advertising on TV, not one reader commented on this.

They all complained about the excesses and most of them said that it viewers walk out on sponsors' plugs it is the sponsors' fault. That the TV industry is not aware of the fact that much of video advertising is unacceptable is apparent from sonic of the clauses in the new code of practices of the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters, which went into effect yesterday. Of course, the code is binding only on stations that choose to subscribe to it, because it is a voluntary code. Call for Good Tasfo The first paragraf in the section of the code devoted to advertising begins: ever mindful of the role of television as a guest in the home, a television broadcaster should exercise Unceasing care to supervise the form in which advertising is presented over his facilities." It would be fine if every spdn-sor were required to write that out on the blackboard 500 times. Next: "Advertising messages song that only a genius could have selected for the occasion.

It was "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life." The first program, by the way, was sponsored by Libby, McNeill Libby. On the premiere were Hal Totten, who described OLD LOGBOOKS RECORD FLUBS OF EARLY RADIO BY ANTON REMENIH Radio today functions like a well oiled machine. Split seconds are handled as easily as a housewife mops the floor. Technical troubles that delay programs are almost never heard of any more. It not always! so.

We ran some 20 year old station logbooks at WMAQ the other day that contained cryptic notations illuminating the problems that beset the then infant industry. Many of them are humorous today. Log keepers often become unofficial critics of programs, altho their primary function was to record technical flubs. On one occasion a scheduled talk failed to show up at the transmitter station near Bcnsenville. Engineers traced it to two dead mikes in the studios, then located in the Daily News building.

The program was switched to another studio and eventually went on the air. Apparently the engineer logging the show thought little of it, because he wrote: Nothing lost but time." Engineer-Critic's Views Ted Husing was the CBS announcer doing the world scries of 1930 between the Philadelphia Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. The logger recorded: He's making mistakes. Just said the Cards leading 3 to 0 when they actually were losing by this score." A bit later the engineer, with understandable civic pride, took exception to a Husing remark reflecting on the reputation of his city.

He wrote into the record: "Announcer just said Lefty Grove has more hop on that ball than a machine gunner out in Chicago." SUcncq from Ralnbo A 15 second period' of silence on radio today would cause heads to roll, but in 1930 the boys took it in stride. the announcer gave no indication he was thru. He iust auit. If this one were followed, beer! and wino advertising apparently1 could not be accepted because many responsible persons object to it. The advertising of hard liquor is forbidden under the code.l "An advertiser who markets more than one product should not be permitted to use advertising copy devoted to an acceptable product for purposes of publicizing the brand name or other identification of a product that is not acceptable," one clause reads.

Under the code, beer advertising is acceptable but liquor is not. As we recall, the Amos 'n' Andy show is sponsored by a heer, but the brewing company is owned by a liquor distillery combine which regularly is identified with the program.
