I I 1. PART 1-PAGE GilICA00 SCIENCE ACADEMY LURES IYOTH TO HAILS History Taught to All Who Are Interested. BY JAMES O'DONNELL BENNETT. There it is, fellows, there it is just like the one we saw in the woods!" The boy's voice broke on an adolescent squeak of excitement Another voice joined in the strain of triumph: Yessir, just like itthe brown cap and everything! And it's built kind of like a sparrow. And the label says it's an oven bird.

Now we know!" The biggest of the three boysperhaps 15 years of agechimed in with, "Didn't I tell you we'd find it here? Didn't I say maybe it was an oven and how its nest looks like an old fashioned baker's oven? Didn't Other high excitements of discovery and identification kept the eager lads busy for en hour. They were very intent, and their observation was alert and shrewd. They were taking a long stcp in the acquirement of knowledge. Find Fascinating Alcoves. The fascinating alcoves at the north end of the third floor of the Academy of Sciences in Lincoln park were the scene of the quest.

Those alcoves contain mounted specimens of more than 250 species of the birds of Chicagolan db oth residents and migrants. The specimens beat any book of colored plates in helping a fellow to identify living birds he has seen In the woods: they are more vivid, more get-at-able than plates. The three boys who finally solved their problem as the oven bird were fine types of boys. They were not bird killers, but joyous students of bird life. and it warmed one's heart to listen to their speculations when they were baffled and their jubilation when the solved their problem.

Discovery wab putting drama into their hour at thE academy, and theynot priggishly, but happily and spontaneouslywere finding out that the aaking sure of your facts is a rewarding game. Admission to the academy is free at all times. From doormen to curators, everybody is helpful The voice of Miss Royce when she answers a question over the academy's telephone has welcome in its tones. 1 Good Counsel for All. Any boyor girlwho, as Director Howard K.

Gloyd puts it, has a seriots purpose along natural history lines," can get good counsel at the academy. Does a girl want to know how press and dry plants? She will. be shown. Does a boy wish to try his hand at building a habitat group? He will be admitted to the academy's workrooms, where he can follow the delicate craftsmanship of some of the most ingenious artists and artisans in Chicago. Does another young visitor wish to start a collection of the minerals, or the shells, or the fossils, or the insects of Chicago land? He will be shown how to start.

Is another eager to build a cabinet for his treasures? In half an hour he can learn a bookful. We are always willing," salo Dr. Gloyd, to give promising young chaps a chanceand by young chaps I mean boys from 12 years up." There would be morefar more of this kind of instruction if the academy had a larger staf and more money. Its scientists and artisans cannot teach large groups nor turn the institution into a manual training school for budding scientists. The scientists have to carry forward important and exacting researches and the artists and the artisans are very busy renewing old exhibits and installing fresh collections.

Academy Cramped for Funds. The point isand it is a big one that if a group of well-wishers of science, well-wishers of youth, and well-wishers of the community would create a fund of, say, two or three thousand dollars a year, then two teachers, giving instruction perhaps one or two afternoons a week, could be added to the academy's staf. In a few years such instruction would create such a body of young devotees of science as would influence the whole trend of youthful culture in Chicago. The academy has a noble building and a stal of enthusiasts, but at every turn it is cramped for money. Nevertheless, under Dr.

Gloyd the wir academy is renewing its youthnext to the Chicago Medical society it is the oldest scientific body in Chicago and drawing more closely to the youth of the community. It works hard. Old and important exhibits I that have grown dim and dusty are being renewed. New and amazingly vivid habitat groups and panoramas are being installed under the direc tion of that master of habitat paint ing, Earl G. Wright.

s- Wholly new groups soon to be in. stalled in the third floor exhibition 'hall will be an important contribution to Chicagoland's ecologythe branch of biology dealing with the mutual relations between organisms and their environment; in other words, groups showing in detail the fauna of our region as they live and where they live, but emphasizing the I locale instead of the animals. Bulletin Changes Form. I- Not only is the academy enriching and renewing its own collections but it is also completing thirty habitat 'groups which are to go into the 1 tieldhouses of the Chicago park dis trict. Significant, too, of new life at the I old treasure house is the appearance this week of its quarterly bulletin completely new form.

It always Contained valuable matter but it; locked like a legislative document and principally allured specialists.i Now it comes forth as The Chicago Naturalist and is a handsome thirty. two page magazine, full of scientific and human interest and many good pictures. One more sentence on the academy's service to Chicago's boys: Parents who will look in on its work will find that it is cheap and enrobling insurance against the lure of the alley gang and similar big city perils. BY THE REV. JOHN EVANS. Chicago Tribune Press Service.

Philadelphia, May 28. ISpecial.Bingoism has been found to be the name for the prevailing philosophy of the day in America, all the way from the national government and its kind of easy money, down to the quiet little bi.igo or keeno game that is played for the benefit of benighted Hindoos and crippled children by good church folk. That is easy money, too. But even that philosophy has been found to be a little better than that ot the road hog who gratifies himself with his half of the road in the middle or of the glutton who fills himself with rich food and plenty of cocktails. The trend, however, is up from the pigsty philosophy to the bingo kind.

But it also is downward from the philosophy of solid old-fashioned American virtues of work and thrift. Presents Charts to Assembly. These conclusions have been reached by the Rev. Dr. Herman C.

Weber of New York, president of the national stewardship council, representing 23 denominations, and were made public today at the 150th general assembly of the Presbyterian church in the United States of America, in session here. Moreover, Dr. Weber and his colleagues have graphic charts to prove his contentions. By looking at the charts it is possible, Dr. Weber explained, for each person to grade himself as to his philosophy of life as well as to peg the prevailing attitude toward life as expressed by anything from Naziism to the New Deal.

The latter, he added, with its self-named reference to games of chance and their lure of easy money, is aptly named. Charts Are Described. From bottom to top, the following are the charts: 1. Pigpen philosophy. The center of their circle is the motive of indulgence with segments of the circle devoted to the appetite, using the Bible phrase, whose God is the belly," liquor, lust, ease, and narcotics.

This is explained as being a very common type of thought which had its greatest vogue during and directly after the world war. It supports organized vice, night clubs and the corruptive practices of high society. 2. Bingo philosophy, which was described as coming in with various governmental new deals throughout the world. Motive: Cheap and easy existence.

Segments of circle: "Let George do it," Lady Luck gambling, dependency. shirking, sharp practice, fraud, stealing, and pilfering, racketeering, the world For the government owes me a living. Pictures Main Streetism. 3. Main streetism.

Had been highly respectable until advent of bingo. ism, even though it was described as being motivated by greed. Segments of the circle include money, estate. things, power, social position, culture, and pride. 4.

Paganism. The center of this circle is self-will with its segments devoted to arrogance, pride of self or class, nationalism, cynicism, selfish living, exploitation, search for pleasure, and idolatry. 5. Materialism. Center of circle is self-righteousness.

Segments are: There is no God and no soul, biological love, ethics of self-interest, behaviorism, which says we do what we do because our glands demand it, salvation by education, sin is disease or an upset gland. 6. Stewardism. Center: Partnership with God. Segments: Creative living, right getting, right using, sharing, giving, tithing, unselfishness, joy, serenity, confidence, and humility.
