Fresh from husband of Violet, nee Bach; dear Helped Create Atom Bomb in 1940s Princeton, N.

Feb. 19 (UPD J. Robert Oppenheimer, the quiet physicist who helped create the atom bomb to end war and later called it a sin, will be buried as he spent his last years in private. Oppenheimer died last night at his Olden Farms home of cancer of the throat. His widow, Katherine, who was almost constantly at his side, announced today that the funeral will be private.

A memorial service was planned but details were incomplete. He Smoked Pipe Oppenheimer, a shy, soft-spoken man who smoked a pipe constantly, was director of the Los Alamos, N. scientific laboratory, working on the atomic bomb until 1945. He later disagreed with Dr. Edward Teller, who proposed building a hydrogen bomb, and his protests led to the removal of his security clearance by former President Eisenhower.

In April, 1954, Eisenhower ordered "a blank wall be placed between Oppenheimer and secret data." Oppenheimer never sought a review of his security status, but President Johnson awarded him the Atomic Energy commission's Enrico Fermi award for the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Climate of McCarthy Oppenheimer was accused of associating with Communists during World War II, altho the Soviet Union was an American ally. The political climate of the McCarthy era brought suspicion about what were called fundamental defects in his character, and a three-man board decided in 1954 his security clearance should not be retained altho he was a loyal citizen. He also was dropped as an AEC consultant Born in New York City on April 22, 1904, of a German immigrant who became a wealthy textile importer and a Baltimore artist, Oppenheimer studied at Harvard and Cambridge. He received a Ph.

D. degree at the University of Got-tingen in Germany. Until World War II and his appointment to Los Alamos he taught at the University of California and at the California Institute of Technology. Following the war he became director of the institute of advanced studies at Princeton university. He was tentatively identified as D. Keefe, 66, a retired railroad employe. Firemen found his body in the debris of his apartment late Saturday after they doused flames that caused $3,500 damage.

Some 60 persons fled safely late Saturday as fire raged in a third-floor apartment at 1507 Warren blvd. Firemen said the blaze was apparently started by children playing with matches. Estimated damage to the four-story building was $1,500. Firemen quickly extinguished a two-alarm blaze yesterday that caused $6,000 damage to a two-story building at 1551 S. Kedzie av.

The fire, which started when flames burst from a deep fat fryer in a first-floor restaurant, caused six persons to flee second floor apartments.
