Perry, 21, one of the city's top 1967 -year high schood graduates, was killed in combat in Viet Nam. Perry, who lived at 7116 S. Paulina was an infantryman with the 26th marine regiment, 1st battalion, when killed last Saturday while.

leading a group of marines south of Da Nang. Named Harper Star The marine was named star Harper High school graduate, one of the top 10 in the city, when he was graduated in January, 1967. He attended the Amundsen campus of Chicago City college, 5110 N. Damen until October of that year before enlisting for three years. His father, Kenneth, said that young Perry had been awarded Marine Corp.

Kenneth Perry three Purple Hearts, a bronze star, and silver star during his two tours in Viet Nam. His son won the bronze star for rescuing fellow infantryman by helping them board a copter which was under fire. The silver star was awarded for holding off the Viet Cong for four hours, he said. Survivors Are Listed He also is survived by his mother, Louise; two brothers, Joseph Jr. and red; two sisters, Judy and Merilou.

Two other Chicago area service men were killed in Viet Nam, according to the defense department. Doyle Parson, 36, chief boatswain's mate serving with a navy river assualt force was killed in combat recently, 16 miles south of Saigon. Lived in Waukegan Holder of two Purple Hearts, Parson, who lived with his wife, Arlene, at 3714 Glen Flora Waukegan, was killed during his third tour in Viet Nam. A navy veteran of 14 years, he had been in Viet Nam nine months. Survivors beside his widow include a son, James, and his parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Parson of Lincoln, Neb. Pfc. Robert L. Smith, 26, whose wife, Pearl, lives at 6414 Parnell also was killed in Viet Nam.

Mrs. Smith said that she was told Monday that her husband was killed during a search mission on Dec. 30, after having arrived in Viet Nam earlier in the month. He entered the army last March. He was a graduate of a high school in St.

Louis. SHIP BREAKS UP OFF JAPAN; 7 IN CREW ARE LOST Tribune Wire TOKYO, Jan. 7 -The Liberian tanker Sofia P. broke up in the Pacific southeast of Japan today and its captain and six crew members have been lost, Japanese maritime sources reported. A spokesman said an explosion early today shattered the bow of the vessel.

The Matson Navigation company said its ship Pacific Banker had rescued 22 survivors and is now en route to Kobe, Japan. The British merchant ship Fernie said 10 or 12 men stranded on the stern of the vessel had signaled that all officers had been lost. The Liberian-registered Sofia owned by a Monrovian firm, was en route to Singapore from Baytown, when the explosion occurred 700 miles from the Japanese coast. TRUCK KILLS UNIDENTIFIED PEDESTRIAN An unidentified man' died last night in Illinois Research hospital of injuries he suffered when struck earlier in the day by a truck in the intersection of Aberdeen and Madison streets. Police said the driver of the truck, William Haerlyn, 41, of Portage, them he did not see the man walk into the rear wheels of the trailer.

Police described the victim as white and between 40 and 59 years old. Up to midnight Monday, 12 persons had been killed in traftic accidents in Cook county since Dec. 31. Of those, eight were in Chicago, where 475 persons were injured in the same period. Eugene N.

Malato Mass for Eugene N. Malato, 85, of 6116 Landers who died Monday, will be said at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. John Bosco's Catholic church, Belden and McVicker avenues. From 1904 to 1968, Mr.

Malato owner a real estate business on the near northwest side, and at one time was a co-publisher of an Italian newspaper here. He is survived by his widow, Rose; a son, Stephen; two daughters, Mrs. Antoinette Valenti and Mrs. Joan Crafton; 10 grandchildren; a sister; and a brother. Norman E.

Bourne OBITUARIES Melvin E. Amstutz Services for Melvin E. Amstutz, 70, Lake county highway superintendent, will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow in the First United Methodist church, 128 Utica Waukegan.

Mr. Amstutz who lived at Oak Lane road, Libertyville died Monday in Condell Memorial hospital, Libertyville. He became county highway commissioner in 1949 and had been a department employe for 45 years at the time of his death. He was a past president of the Illinois Association of County Superintendents of and a past regional vice president of the National Association of County Engineers. He leaves his widow, Leora; two daughters, Mrs.

Carol Kozma and Mrs. Joy Caldwell; six brothers. grandchildren; and two Memorial services for Norman E. Bourne, 46, business manager of the Gary PostTribune newspaper, will be held at 7 p. m.

tomorrow in the Ogden Dunes Community church, Ogden Dunes, Ind. Mr. Bourne, who lived at 45 Ski Hill Ogden Dunes, died Monday in the Methodist hospital, Gary. He joined the Post-Tribune staff in 1952 as make-up editor. Survivors include his widow, Gloria; a son, James; and an adopted stepson.

Sister Mary, Juliana Curran Mass for Sister Mary Juliana Curran will be said at 10 a.m. Friday in Mercy Hall, a home for retired nuns, 3701 W. 99th where she died Monday. A member of the Religious Sisters of Mercy order, Sister was controler of Mercy hospital in Janesville, from 1963 to 1969. Before that, she was business manager of Mercy hospital here from 1933 to 1963.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Madge Lehman, Grace, and Bird Curran. Miss Rose M. Kennedy nity. Mrs.

Lawrence J. McCarte Mass for Miss Rose M. Kennedy, 90, a Chicago school teacher for 50 years and a member of an Austin community pioneering family, will be said at 10 a. m. tomorrow in the St.

Rose M. Dean Mrs. Rose M. Dean, 65, of 6301 Sheridan died yesterday in the Edgewater hospital. Mrs.

Dean, a secretary, was one of the founding members of the nation-wide Hematology Research Foundation. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Audrey Levine; a sister; three brothers; and three grandchildren. Willard, her husband, a salesman, died in 1960. Services will be held at 2 p.

Sam Murnick Sam Murnick, 92, of 4624 Monticello a bricklayer until his retirement, died yesterday in Weiss Memorial hospital. Dr. John Chornyak, 68, retired army colonel who had served as director of the Illinois Society of Mental Hygiene, a teacher at Loyola university, Chicago, and a psychiatrist for the Veterans administration; in St. Petersburg, Fla. Donald C. Duvall, 54, president of the Wheelin Steel corporation and a member of the steel industry's coordinating committee which handled wage contract negotiations; in Pittsburgh.

Bernard S. Horne, 64, retired board chairman of Joseph Horne department store in Pittsburgh, founded by his grandfather, and a past president of the Pennsylvania Retail association; in South Yarmouth, Mass. Kaull, 100, a resident of the Chicago area for 30 years, will be held tomorrow in Wilmette. Mrs. Kaull, formerly of Appletree road in Winnetka, died Sunday in a Highland Park nursing home. She was the widow of Osborn B. Kaull, a farm real estate broker.

Mrs. Kaull was a native of and lived most of her life in Earlville, La Salle county. Surviving are a son, Osborn; two daughters, Mrs. Kathyrn Moore and Mrs. Orpha Warner; five grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Earlville. Samuel J. Repkin Samuel J. Repkin, 62, of 525 Stratford died last night after suffering an apparent heart attack in his home. He was a furniture salesman for 35 years and was employed by Harlem Furniture company, 2525 N.

Catherine of Siena Catholic church, 38 N. Austin Oak Park. Mr. Lessner, retired president of the A-Z Letter company, 32 W. Randolph died Monday after suffering a heart attack while driving his auto.

He is survived by a sister, Grace. DEMONSTRATOR SURRENDERS IN INDIANA CASE Jesse S. Morris, 46, charged with malicious trespass as a result of leading a demonstration last year at a dinner at which Indiana Gov. Edgar Whitcomb was to have spoken, surrendered to Lake county, charges of officials theft resulting yesterday from the incident. The original indictment on the charge of malicious trespass against Morris had been dismissed by Judge John McKenna in Criminal court.

Morris campaigned in Gary's Negro district for Judge McKenna, a Democrat of East Chicago, who won the election. Later Morris was appointed by Richard Hatcher, mayor of Gary, to a job as coordinator of a federally funded concentrated ment program. Henry Kowalczyk, Lake county prosecutor, said he would try to move the trial of Morris to another court outside McKenna's jurisdiction when the new trial on the theft charge is scheduled. Morris faces a possible 1 to 10 year sentence and a $5,000 fine on the theft charge. HENRY WOODS' ESTATE IS PUT AT 9.5 MILLION The estate of Henry C.

Woods retired chairman of Sahara Coal company, 59 E. Van Buren was placed at 515,895 in an inheritance tax return filed yesterday. in County court. He lived at 1500 Lake Shore dr. and died Sept.

4, 1968, at age 72. Federal. tax was placed at $4,117,552 and Illinois tax at $966,739. After $40,000 in specific bequests, the residue was placed in trust for his widow, Elouise, with provision that on her death it shall go to her son, Henry C. Jr.

Assets included stocks in 19 companies, with the large majority consisting of 6,678 shares of the coal company valued in the return at $8,567,874. Actor Dies Services for James Edwards, 51, Negro movie actor, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Mount Zion Baptist church, 1047 Kenwood Hammond. Mr. Edwards died Sunday in his San Diego home.

He had appeared in a number of films, including "The "The Caine Mutiny, "Home of the and "Pork Chop Hill." Mr. Edwards made appearances in television shows as "The Virginian." and "Mannix." He is survived by his widow, Leola; a daughter, Eugia; his father, James, of Anderson, 'his mother, Mrs. Anne Riley, 908 Ames Hammond; four brothers; and four sisters. WISCONSIN BOY GIVES ORGANS IN TRANSPLANT ROME, Jan. 6 (P)- -The kidneys and corneas of a 16-year-old Appleton, tourist were transplanted into four Italians after a brain hemorrhage killed the youth yesterday. The youth Gregory Menn, was on a vacation tour with his family. He was stricken Sunday while sightseeing at the ruins of Pompeii.

No Hope for Boy Doctors at a Naples hospital told his parents there was no hope for the boy. His father, John Menn, an attorney, authorized the transplant of his son's heart, kidneys, and corneas. Born in New York City, he began his newspaper career on the Niagara Falls Gazette before moving to Florida 21 years ago as a reporter for the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville and later for the Miami Herald. He was a member of the board of directors of the Society of American Travel Writers and past chairman of the group's Southeast Caribbean chapter.
