Chicago Tribune, Friday, May 13, 1977 Section 3 CEAS GI0VENC0 KANDL NEGRETE SERING VELUNGA Anne Blaine Harrison dies of cancer at age 58 She attended the North Shore Country School in Winnetka, and was graduated from Vassar College, of which she was a trustee. She married Gilbert A. Harrison Oct. 31, 1951, and they settled in Washington, where Harrison was owner and editor-in-chief of the New Republic magazine for 20 years. Survivors, in addition to her husband, are three sons, David Blaine, James Louis, and Joel McCormick; a daughter.

Eleanor Anne; and a half-sister Mrs. Don-Michael Bird of Winnetka. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Alban's Church, with burial in Chicago on Tuesday.

Special to Tha Trtbun WASHINGTON Mrs. Anne "Nancy" Blaine Harrison, a public education advocate and philanthropist who was a descendant of two prominent American families, died Thursday of cancer in the Washington Hospital Center. She was 58. Mrs. Harrison, who was born in Chicago on Nov.

19, 1918, was the great-granddaughter of Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the McCormick reaper, and James G. Blaine. Blaine served as speaker of the House, United States senator from Maine, and twice as secretary of state. He was the Republican nominee for President defeated by Grover Cleveland in 1884 Obituaries championships in 1932 and 1933. The highlight of his ring career came in 1933, when he defeated Louis, who would later become the world heavyweight champion, to take the Amateur Athletic Union title in Boston.

Mr. Marek fought professionally until he joined the Navy in World War II. After returning to civilian life, he operated several restaurant-lounges in Chicago and wrestled professionally during the 1950s. He opened his first antique shop, at 338 W. Armitage in 1960.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Kostas; a son, Victor; four grandchildren; and a brother. John J. Janowskl Services for John J. Janowskl, 76, a retired deputy clerk in Cook County Circuit Court, were set for Friday in West Columbia, S. C.

Mr. Janowskl, who moved to Cayce, S. last January, died Wednesday in West Columbia. He is survived by a son, John a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Stevenson; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Miss Thalia Vavra Services for Miss Thalia Vavra, 86, a former resident of Chicago's Pilsen community and of Berwyn, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at 2921 S. Harlem Berwyn. Miss Vavra, who lived at the Bensenville Home Society, 331 S. York died Wednesday in a Bensenville nursing home.

She was associated for most of her life with the Vavra Pharmacy, operated by her family for 80 years at 19th Street and Racine Avenue. A sister, Minerva, survives. Guunar A. Ekstrom Services for Gunnar A. Ekstrom, 70, a retired employe of The Tribune's warehouse department, will be at 1 p.m.

Friday in the chapel at 25 E. Erie St. Mr. Ekstrom died May 2 in his home at 15 E. Erie St.

He retired last year after 30 years as a Tribune employe. Surviving are a brother and a sister, both of Sweden. Arthur George Services for Arthur George, 65, a lawyer with offices at 11 S. La Salle will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel at 3440 N.

Central Av. Mr. George, a North Side resident, died Wednesday in Bethany Methodist Hospital. He is survived by his widow, Bernke; and a sister. Samuel Kurland Samuel Kurland, 70, who retired to Gulfport, last year, died in a St.

Petersburg hospital Wednesday. Mr. Kurland, owner of Kurland Mfg. a manufacturer of auto parts, lived, in Skokie for many years. He is survived by his widow, Ann; and a brother.

Services will be Monday in Sioux City, la. Max Marek Services for Max "The Polish Pride" Marek, 62, one of the few boxers ever to defeat Joe Louis, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at 4152 N. Sheridan Rd. Mr.

Marek was found dead Wednesday in his combination apartment and antique shop at 3800 N. Sheffield Av.
