DAVIES, BRITISH LIBERAL PARTY LEADER, DIES Caused Downfall of Chamberlain LONDON, March 23 Davies, 78, for mer leader of the British Liberal party and a member of parliament for the last 32 years, died today of a cerebral thrombosis suffered 11 days ago. Davies was Liberal leader from 1945 to 1956 and in 1955 was nominated for the Nobel peace prize by 100 parliamentarians in many countries on behalf of his long campaign for world government. Born on a farm in Wales in 1884, Davies entered parliament in 1929 during brilliant legal career that followed his graduation from Cambridge university.

Quit Party Temporarily In 1931, he left the Liberal party to join a group called the National Liberals who supported Labor Leader Ramsay Macdonald's National coalition government formed to fight the depression. He returned to the Liberal party as World War II loomed and in 1940 played an important part in bringing down the Neville Chamberlain Conservative government which was replaced by Winston Churchill's war cabinet. Took Over In 1945 He assumed leadership of the Liberal party in 1945 when the party was reduced to 12 seats by the Labor landslide that followed the war. In 1951, when Churchill and the Conservatives returned to power with a narrow majority, Davies and the Liberals were asked to join a coalition government. Davies, tho reportedly offered a cabinet post as minister of education, refused on the grounds it would mean the end of the Liberals as an ent party, however small.

Ends Stewardship When he handed the party rule over to Jo Grimond, the present leader, in 1956, there were only six Liberals in parliament. His death once again reduces the party's seats to six, though a recent by-election victory has heartened supporters. Davies was president of the World Association of Parliamentarians for World Peace and was treasurer of the British branch of the Inter-Parliamentary union.
