Resting at Stermer RECENT CARTOON pictured a man talking with his psychiatrist and saying, "I haven't found out what life is. I'm too busy making a living." We are not really too busy to give? thought to the pursuits that make life worth living. On the contrary, we fill our lives with so many unnecessary activities that we avoid the need to know what life is until something overwhelms us and we are left with ourselves on our hands. In the story of Jacob there is a parable of modern man, making a living and having little else. Jacob, you will remera-, ber, stole the birthright of his brother Esau by way of a rude' deception.

He then left home and fled to the desert, where for the first time he met himself in a piercing and revealing dream. THE GOOD THAT JACOB had resisted came back to, plague his spirit. The hard and selfish young man dreamed of a ladder propped against the sky. with God at the top of claiming the shrewd and double-minded young man who had. cared so little for things beyond himself.

There was a com--merce between the spiritual heights and the heart of Jacob. The tale of Jacob is a tremendous one, suggesting that even while we pursue our wants in our status-seeking too busy making a living to come alive, there is a hunger for the spiritual and moral heights. We are wistful, yearning for the best things In life we've left behind, craving for what Jesus called "life." Plagued by "nothingness" and haunted, by the brooding awareness that we are dead when we ought" to be vitally alive, we want what we have lost. Gracious- Lord, sustain our concern for the things that make life worth living even when we are bogged down in tftev struggle to survive and to attain. Amen.

I would be better off if married persons could be ordained priests and if priests who had married could be readmitted to the church. This could coexist with free ly chosen celibacy, they said, Funeral Home, aau-iv t-unerton avenue. Funeral Wednesday, Jan. 21, 8:45 a. to St.
