whose exploits in sports, newspaper, and publicity vork made hira a widely known figure in Chicago for more than 50 years, died Tuesday in Columbus Hospital. Mr. Healey. who lived at S-iOl W. Washington was an administrative aide to the Cook County clerk from when he gave up his private publicity business, until be retired because of poor health last summer.

He had a colorful career that Included writing yachting and other sports news and finally general news stories for the old Chicago Examiner; working as a script writer in Hollywood: and as the publicity man responsible for the coon-skin cap worn by the late Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee in his national political campaigns. FA MOl'S AS a raconteur, he was a pal of actors and other celebrities and was almost as dapper a dresser as the late Adolphe Menjou, one of his friends. As a school boy in Canada, Mr. Healey deserted the classroom when he was 15 to enlist in the Canadian field artillery during World War I.

After serving in the trenches in France, where he spent his first Christmas away from home, he transferred to the Canadian Air Force and flew the old British Sop-withs and Bristols in combat. He was discharged as a squadron commander and returned to Canada to become a student at St. Michael's College in Toronto. IN 1923. WHEN the Illinois Athletic Club organized Chicago's first hockey team, Healey was one of the top Canadi an amateurs brought here to play.

Thej first person be met in Chicago outside the Illinois Central Railroad's 12th Street Station was a cab driver named Otto Janotisek. who later became a City Council member for many yean. The hockey team played five years, winning every game except two in its last year. Mr. Healey, meanwhile, wrote yachting news for the Examiner.

He was paid on a space-rate basis, and filled up so much space the paper made him a full-time sports reporter to save money. In the 1930s, after years as a sports and cityside reporter, he went to Hollywood. HE WAS BACK on tbe Examiner la 1939 when World War II began and promptly volunteered for the Canadian Air Force. An Intelligence officer, he was pressed into service as a combat flyer during the Battle of Britain and wound up as a wing commander and holder of Britain's Distinguished Service Order. His other decorations included the British Military Medal and the Russian Order of St.

Stanislaus. After World War II he opened his own publicity and public relations office in Chicago and worked here and in Washington until failing health compelled him to seek a quieter life in the office of the Cook County clerk. He is survived by his widow, Mary. Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m.

to 10 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at 1035 N. Dearborn St. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday In Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior streets.
