Chicago Tribune, Monday, September 17, 1973 Feminique Section 2A 11 I 7I 3 Heboldt's mi Working with leather may have been born with the caveman and then transferred to the province of the frontiersman, artist, or elite designer; but now it is the property of anyone who can hold sharp scissors and a specialized leather needle. Men, and children from all walks of life are using leather Mm Si to fashion clothing and accessories, and still other people would like to "The tells you how to work with leather to make Nothing and accessories like sandals, handbags, or belts. learn. It is for the learners that "The Leathercraft Book" is intended. "The Leathercraft Book" LRan-dom House, $3.95, by Pat Hills with Joan Wiener leaves no hide, skin, or kix unturned in getting down to the basics of wonting with leather and making belts, bags, sandals, and garments.

If the book has a disadvantage, it Is that it sometimes is too basic with extraneous material: "Treat your knives with respect. They cut leather and also human skins." But it is this very basic approach, applied to the leather craft, that makes the book extremely valuable to the potential beginner. THE BOOK BEGINS with a discussion of leather itself: a definition of terms; the names for sizes, types, and thicknesses of a leather piece; and lists of the uses of various types and sizes of leather. Not knowing about a deep buff, split, skiver, top grain, kip, slab, or hide when you want to buy leather would be like wanting to buy a car but not knowing the differences in design and purpose between a station wagon and a convertible. The book also tells about measurements used in leather.

Thickness is described by the ounce, for example, regardless of what your old grammar school math teacher would say. Another section deals with tools of the trade. The list runs from sharp scissors and a leather needle for use with lightweight suede, to a list of objects to buy that would make you feel like a high school shop class teacher. Among the more basic tools listed are utility and skife knives, shears, metal square, ruler, awl, one- and four-prong stitching punches, rotary punch, round and oblong drive punches, divider, rawhide mallet, hammer, ruffer, and hardwood wheel NEXT FOLLOWS THE actual sewing section, with hints on everything from using pliers to pull thru a needle and thread, to keeping leather from sticking to the sewing machine, to setting rivets and grom-mets, to imaginative uses of crochet and macrame for joining sections of leather. By page 45 of the 132-page paperback book, the authors are discussing patterns marked as to degree of difficulty for belts, purses, clothing, and sandals.

Many patterns with excellent illustrations are given in the book, and advice is given for purchasing patterns for clothing: Avoid patterns with too many seams to keep from creating a lumpy garment. Especially interesting was the section on making sandals. If you are the type who traces feet in the sand or looks over a shoulder to see wet footprints after going thru a puddle, you would enjoy making shoes. How to work patchwork in leather, use applique and painted designs, apply fringe and use contrasting trim also are tackled in this book. The last chapter is a short directory of leather suppliers in many states.
