Col. Smith, 61, died yesterday of heart disease. He was a White House aid to Presidents Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt over a 12 year span. He attended Culver Military academy and became an army officer at Fort Sheridan, III, in the summer of 1917.

He served in France in World War was an air corps colonel in World War II, and was war department press officer at the first Bikini atom bomb tests. He is survived by his widow, twin daughters, and a stepdaughter. Mrs. Sarah H. Thompson Mrs.

Sarah Hall Thompson, 82, of 807 Hinman Evans-ton, died yesterday in the nursing home at 1021 Granville av. She was the widow of Samuel R. Thompson, early Chicago coffee broker. Mrs. Thompson was a charter member of the Fort Dearborn chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by a son, John H. Thompson of The Tribune, and a brother, Alfred B. Hall. Services will be held Monday at 1 p. m.

He leaves his widow, Augusta; two sisters and brother, Irvin, also a retired Chicago policeman. Joseph Jiran Services for Joseph Jiran, 87, of 1333 W. 18th retired neaa ot tne Jiran music stores, which he founded in 1898, will be held at 11 a. m. Monday in the chapel at 584 W.

Cermak Cicero, Mr. Jiran died Thursday in St Luke's hospital. Surviving is a son, Charles J. 70, instructor of law at Harvard univer-sity for 40 years, an ardent internationalist and pleader for leftist causes, died today in Philips House, General hospital. He had suffered a heart attack Sunday at his Cambridge home.

Chafee was widely known as an author and lecturer, especially on human rights, civil liberties, and freedom of the press. He served on a United Na tions subcommittee on free dom of information and the press, and represented the United States in 1948 at Geneva at an international conference on freedom of information. Instructed Alger Hiss Alger Hiss, the state de partment official convicted of perjury in the concealment of a soviet spy ring, studied under Prof. Chafee at Harvard and strongly supported Chafee's appointment to the U. N.

subcommittee. Within a few years after Chafee published his first book, "Freedom of in 1920, he began signing manifestos, letters, and other documents supporting the Communists and circulated by them. One of these, in the late 1920s, was, a leaflet of the National Popular Government league which attacked the department of justice for its methods of investigating Communists and accused the department of supplying agents who persecuted Sacco and Vanzetti, the anarchists executed here for murder in 1927, Foe of Dies Committee Prof, Chafee signed several statements printed in the Daily Worker, organ of the American ommunists. Among them were attacks on the Dies committee, investigator of un-Americanism, support of the left wing Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and defense of the Communist party against alleged persecution. He pleaded for letters to be sent to President Roosevelt seeking the release of IJarl Browder, imprisoned head of the Communist party in the United States.

He later won acclaim as one of the most authoritative expounders in this country of soviet policy. Sen. McCarthy Wis. accused Chafee of having communist front connections and records of the house committee on un-American activities showed he had engaged in actions indicating sympathy with communism. Dr. Snow was graduated from the University of Illinois medical school in 1926, and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. She was on the staff of Mercy, Women and Children's, Illinois Masonic, St. Francis of Evanston, and of Loyola university's Stritch School of Medicine. She was the first president of the Chicago Women's Medical association.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frances Burrill and Miss Julia Jane Snow, and her Mrs. Myrtle J. Hammel. Services will be held at 1:30 p.

m. Monday in the chapel at 1100 Greenleaf Wilmette. HALF MILLION ESTATE LEFT BY REISENHUS Peter P. Reisenhus, retired president of American Glove company and American Tannery company, left an estate estimated, at $500,000, it was disclosed yesterday as his will was admitted to probate by James S. Montana, assistant to the Probate court judge.

Reisenhus was 97 when he died Jan. 27. The will provided $31,500 in bequests to 11 friends and relatives, and that the remain der should be placed in trust for the benefit of the widow, Mathilde, of 939 Castlewood ter. On her death, she may dis pose of half the trust funds by will. Of the remaining half, 72 per cent will go on her death to a group of relatives and 28 per cent is to go to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

8 UT) Death from cancer came today to Dr. i- John von Neumann, 53, noted atomic scientist cred-ited with great contributions to the theory and design of A-bombs and H-bombs. The Hun Von iveuixuum garian born mathematician, a member of the atomic energy commission since 1955, was also known for work on the peaceful use of atomic energy. He1 was especially noted for outstanding contributions to the development of high speed electronic computing machines "electronic brains" which play a role in developing nuclear weapons and are being increasingly used in the design of atomic power reactors. He has been described as "one of the great mathematicians i of this generation." Professor at Princeton 111 at intervals since the summer of -1955, but not in capacitated until some time in the last year, "Johnny" von Neumann, as some of his col leagues knew him, died at the army's Walter Reed hospital.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Roman Catholic chapel at Walter Reed Mondav and burial wll be at Prince-1 J.
