Memorial service JaSwf -Luk" Ch4Ml- Pair get 100 years in slayings By Lee Strobel CRIMINAL COURT Judge Fred Suria, saying "the death penalty would be appropriate had it been in effect," sentenced two 24-year-old men to 100 to 200 years in prison Thursday for the execution-style slaying of two men and the wounding of a woman on April 20, 1974.

Sentenced were Hardy Lew-Is, 5737 S. Emerald A and Johnny Smith, 5600 S. Union Av. Assistant State's Attorneys Robert Smierciak and Robert Best said the men fatally shot Henry Johnson, 23, of 1742 W. i 77th and Joseph Garrett, 24, of 4433 S.

Shields while attempting to rob the Johnson apartment. Smierciak said the men first attempted to electrocute Johnson, Garrett, and Johnson's wife, DeLois, 22, by forcing them to put their heads and arms in a full bathtub and then throwing a hot iron into the water. When that failed they shot all three in the head, killing Johnson and Garrett and wounding Johnson's wife, he said. SMIERCIAK SAID Johnson reportedly was a drug pusher. He theorized that the breakin was for drugs and money.

Suria said the slaying occurred before the death penalty for such multiple murders went into effect July 1, 1974. The two testified they had been at the Johnson apartment that day but denied the crime. They were arrested several days after the slayings and convicted on Feb. 19. The two men also were sen tenced to 10 to 100 years for attempted murder and 6 to 20 years for three counts of attempted armed robbery.

Before sentencing, Lewis asked the judge if he could leave the room because "I don't think I can take it." The judge refused. Obituaries Peter F. Vetrano, beloved father ot Ross (Yolanda), Frances and Maria, dear Grandfather ot seven; fond brother of ddie. Mass June 9, 930 am. at St.
