Schuetz Profit-share funds won't affect benefits By Harold Blake Walker I ANYONE WHO PLAYS a musical instrument is aware that each note on the scale has its overtones. The strings on a piano, for instance, vibrate in sympathy with related fundamental tones. The overtones enrich the sound. Usually we are unconscious of the overtones of a musical instrument, but to the trained ear they are significant. They suggest the relatedness of things and remind us that not even musical notes can be expressed in isolation from other notes.

The experiences and episodes of our lives lute overtones that are significant. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. There are spiritual overtones that accompany our secular concerns. Notes of beauty and love point to a reality beyond ourselves and remind us that the whole of things holds wonders beyond all we could ask or think. THERE ARE HINTS of God In the commonplaces of our common life and abiding values shining thru our ordinary days.

Aa Walter Rauschenbush noted "all the chief tasks of my life" are related to religion. We do not recognize the overtones. However, if it can be said of us what Isaiah said of his people, and Jesus reiterated, "This people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are heavy of hearing, and their eyes have closed." The task of life is to recognize the spiritual overtones that permeate our common life; to find hints of God in sustaining human relationships; to discern the prodding of the Eternal in moments when we are ashamed. Teach us, God, to listen for the overtones of Thy Spirit in the commonplace events of our lives, overtones that give meaning and significance to the ordinary. Amen.

Beverly Rldot Chapel, 10411 where lervlces will be held Tueaday, 1 By Edward P. LaBrosse Social Insurance Administrator, Social Security Administration I PLAN TO retire at the end of this year and will be entitled to my regular company pension. In addition to the pension, I will receive a sum of money earned during my working years under a profit-sharing plan. This will be paid in monthly installments of about $200 a month, for a period of five years.

Is this profit-sharing payment considered earnings which will affect payment of my Social Security benefits? And, is it subject to the Social Security tax? The profit-sharing payment will not affect your Social Security monthly benefits after your retirement The Social Security retirement test, or work test, takes Into account amounts which you earn In a given month. Usually, one is paid all or most of the money earned soon after the work has been performed on a regularly scheduled pay day. YOUR PROFIT-SHARING money was earned over a period of years during your employment relationship. It Is not earned during your retirement and for that reason will not prevent the payment of Social Social security Security benefits after you have retired. The law excludes from wages, for Social Security credit and tax purposes, payments made to an employe if: The payments are made under an employer plan.

The payments are made upon or after the termination of the employe's employment relationship. The termination of em-ployment was because of death, retirement for disability, or retirement at an age specified in a plan of the employer. The exclusion does not apply to a payment which would have been made if the employment had not been terminated or if termination is for some reason other than death, or retirement because of age or disability.
