1 Section 3 Chicago Tribune, Monday, June 4, 1973 think Teamsters, AFL-CIO gird for battle on farm workers Chicago Tribune Press Service COACHELLA, June 3- The young priest fidgeted with the soiled bandage which covered his broken nose and vowed, "'We are not going to be wiped out here." The Rev. John Bank, 33, a Catholic priest from Youngstown, Ohio, is among the first casualties in the battle between Cesar Chavez' farm workers' union and the powerful International Brotherhood of Teamsters for control of migrant farm laborers in the Southern California desert. Caught in the middle of this potentially explosive situation are nearly 5,000 migrant workers and their. families arriving here this weekend and the owners of the giant ranches where table grapes are grown. UNTIL THIS weekend, confrontation between Chavez' United Farm Workers and the Teamsters have been primarily a trade of insults and muscle -flexing.

However, the showdown on who will rule 1 the California agricultural workers begins tomorrow, when the giant harvest begins thruout the Coachella Valley. Motels in Coachella and In- dio are packed with burly representatives of the Teamsters and opposing representatives from the At issue is the survival of Chavez' infant union. The Teamsters were successful in signing up nearly all the lettuce growers to contracts covering field workers after. a long and bitter organizing campaign by Chavez. On April 14, the grape growers in Coachella allowed contracts with Chavez to expire, and within 24 hours signed pacts with the opposing Teamsters.

Chavez and his followers insist the Teamsters "sold out" the workers and entered into "sweetheart" contracts with the growers in order to wipe out the farm union, an AFL-CIO affiliate." "IT WILL take more than the Teamsters and deals to destroy the farm workers' union," Father Bank insisted. Most observers here feel, tho, that if the Teamsters protect their contracts and the migrant, workers harvest an expected 3.5 million boxes of table grapes from this valley, Chavez and his union, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 members, will be finished. AFL-CIO President George Meany has bankrolled Chavez with $1.6 million in union funds to fight the Teamsters. William Kircher, AFL-CIO organizer, was scheduled to arrive here late today, as well as Cesar Chavez, who was in boycott Chicago promoting a grape as a ploy to pressure growers into abrogating their Teamster contracts. AFTER AN outdoor Mass in Coachella Park attended by nearly 200 migrant workers and their families, Father Bank explained the terror which filled this once-quiet valley.

"I was sitting in a having breakfast last Wednesday with a Wall Street Journal reporter when 14 Teamster goons walked in and surrounded us. "The next thing I knew this guy punched me and shattered my nose." Father Bank later identified his assailant as Michael Falco, 24, of Buena Park, a 300-pound Teamster employe. Chavez doesn't look as big as the image he has created By Cornelia Honchar CESAR CHAVEZ would be overlooked in a He doesn't look like a union leader, a fighter, a man who has brought wealthy landowners to the bargaining table on his terms. He's small, quiet. He doesn't smoke cigars or swagger into a room.

His eyes are alive and his face lights up easily into a warm smile. If anything, he's Hollywood's version of everyman--another nameless, easily forgotten face. And yet, the crowd went wild as he got up to speak yesterday to 500 supporters who jammed into the hot meatpacker's hall at 48th Street and Wabash Avenue. THEY CHANTED his name, Act to take up license of Dorfman 'THE ILLINOIS Department of Insurance has taken action to revoke permanently the insurance broker's license of Allen Dorman, the convicted Teamsters' Union pension consultant. Fred Mauck, department director, said yesterday that his staff lawyers have been ordered to take steps to nullify A11 agreement by which Dorfman could regain his broker's licence after serving his fence in the federal penitentiary in Marion, for conviction on a kickback scheme.

Under the existing agreement made by Mauck's predecessor, Dorfman had his license suspended for one year. UNDER ILLINOIS law, conviction for a felony can serve as grounds for revocation of a broker's license. Mauck said that because of Dorman's conviction on such a serious crime he has forfeited his right to sell insurance in "I pledged to upgrade the standards in the insurance industry, and that is what I plan to do," he said. Dorfman, a close associate of former Teamster president James Hoffa, was sentenced to one year in jail and fined $15,000 by Judge Murray I. Gurfein in United States District Court in New York.

Chavez was in Chicago gathering support for his struggling United Farm Workers' Union which will face a showdown today with the Teamsters Union for control of 5,000 migrant workers in the grape and lettuce fields in California. He spoke quietly, but with conviction, assuring his audience that the confrontation will be won by his union because of the simple justice of the fight. "Migrant workers want their own union, not a truck drivers' union. They want job security, job opportunity, and no special deals with the growers," he said. HE DIDN'T POUND his fists on the podium to make his point, he used facts and figures--history.

"For 58 months we held out for contracts and we finally got them in 1970," he said. "These contracts are up now and in less than nine hours from their expiration we found that the growers had signed with the Teamsters. "We wondered why and then we began to realize the pressures-if the growers didn't go with the Teamsters--then who would transport their produce to the markets?" "They say a boycott won't work--they say it again, but the public will. It has come out to support us already stronger than ever before. "WE'RE GOING TO fight and let the whole world know that grapes and lettuce are a no-no," he said.

After his slow, speech, the crowd was still with him, eager to talk to him, to' touch him, to shake his hand, to get his autograph, and to march wherever he told them to go.
