Got Degree in 1921 He later worked his way thru Denison university in Granville, then went to Johns Hopkins university in Baltimore, where he received his medical degree in 1921. He returned to Burma the next year with his wife, the former Marion G. Morse, and their infant son, and with what he once described as a basketful of discarded surgical in struments.

He established his first hos pital in a rickety building in Namkham. Before World War Seagrave built a dozen more hospitals in places never visited by a doctor before and trained hundreds of Burmese girls as nurses and surgical aids. When the war broke out he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in Gen. Joseph Vine-' gar Joe Stilwell's army, which was forced to retreat from Burma before the advancing Japanese army. Seagrave returned to Burma in 1944 with the allied forces and found his Namkham hospital destroyed.

Rebuilding was hindered by the civil strife that rocked Burma when it received independence from Britain in 1948. Jailed for Treason Two years later Seagrave was arrested for treason and jailed until cleared by Burma's supreme court. He returned to his work despite periodic at tacks of malaria, dysentery and recently, a heart ailment. Seagrave had four sons, one of whom served as administrator of the Namkham hospital for a time. The doctor wrote an autobi ography, "Burma Surgeon" and four other books, "Wastebasket Surgery," "Tales of a Waste- basket Surgeon," "Burma Sur geon Returns," and My Hos-pital in the Hills." MRS.

Reporter Tribune Man Was Only American in Rangoon BY PERCY WOOD Former Tribune Correspondent la Astel Dr. Gordon Seagrave, the famed Burma surgeon, was a prisoner of the Burmese government in Rangoon when I interviewed him late in 1950. An Anglo-Burman police ser geant took notes as we talked. At the time, Seagrave was about to be tried on a charge of treason against Burma a country he and his American family had served thru four generations as medical missionaries.

The exact charges were that Seagrave, in his hospital in Namkham, six miles from the Chinese border, had given aid and comfort to a brigand, then fighting the central Burmese government. Seagrave conducted a nurses school and ran a hospital at Namkham. He was completely isolated from other westerners. He told me he had no choice Alfred J.
