I Joliet blacks call off pupil boycott FINE FINF ITY IO I QLAU I IN EVE DETAIL DETAI OIL A meeting has tentatively been set for Tuesday, according to Kenneth Mines, regional OCR director. It is to be attended by OCR officials, Joliet School Supt.

Edmund Parpart, and representatives of the Illinois Office of Education and the Joliet branches of Operation PUSH and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. PARPART SAID the intent of the meeting is to attempt to reach agreement on alternative desegregation measures. He added, "The burden of desegregation has fallen on the black children, and that is one of the concerns of this office." Mines said he hoped the discussion would be productive because those caught up in the situation have "just been too polarized." Parpart said: "We have agreed to sit down and discuss our desegregation plan with Operation PUSH and the NAACP. It's a discussion session. I'm not negotiating with the NAACP and PUSH.

The only people I'm going to negotiate with are HEW." The Rev. Isaac Singleton, Joliet PUSH president, said, "We decided to let the children go back to school to show good faith." He is also pastor of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, where the "freedom school" was held for the first two days of the boycott before moving into an abandoned house. By Meg O'Connor BLACK JOLIET PITILS who have been attending a 'freedom school" because their parents objected to their being bused to predominantly white city schools are to begin attending the assigned schools Monday. The decision to end the six-week-old school boycott came after the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare intervened in the desegregation conflict, which was prompted by the closing of an all-black elementary school.

As a result of the action by HEW's Office of Civil Rights the 70 black pupils are to begin attending two largely white schools on Monday. Officials of the Joliet school district, under pressure from both the state and federal governments to desegregate, decided to close the all-black McKinley Park Elementary School and send the pupils to the two other schools. THE BOYCOTT BEGAN Jan. 23. following an announcement of plans to close the black school and five days before McKinley's doors were shut.

Over the six weeks, it was 51 per cent effective. The effort was called off after the HEW Chicago regional Office of Civil Rights called on the parties of the dispute to get together to seek alternative desegregation plan.
