DITTMANN BOSCH 2 when Smith was accosted by four armed men end shot to death. She was the only witness who could identify the gunmen. Smith was shot five times with a 9-mra handgun, trial testimony disclosed. On Sept. 1, Miss Thomas sister, Rowena James, 26, an employe of the First National Bank of Chicago, was killed by several shotgun blasts as she stopped her car at a traffic light at Wentworth Avenue and 98th Street, The murder has not been solved, but Quinlivan and Robert Fuenty, also an assistant state's attorney, noted that Sept.

1 was Bell's birthday. Police be lieve it was no coincidence that Mrs. James was slain on that date. JUDGE LOUIS B. Garippo set April 12 for sentencing.

Bell and Miller showed little emotion as the guilty verdict was read in the heavily-guarded courtroom. This was Bell's third trial on murder charges, but his first conviction. Miller and Bell denied involvement in both shootings. TWO MEN described as former mem- bers of the Black Stone street gang were found guilty Sunday of the murder of a South Side man after testimony by a woman whose sister was killed later in what police called an "intimidation" slaying. A Criminal Court jury deliberated for 'more than 18 hours before convicting i.Rudy Bell, 26, and Orville Miller, 25, of murdering Tyrone Smith, 25, who shot to death last year in front of 7948 S.

Union Av. Police believe Smith was killed in a dispute over heroin. The key witness was Audrina Thomas, whose sister was killed by a shotgun blast five months after Smith's murder. Police said they believe the murder was meant to intimidate Miss Thomas, who since has been relocated by the state's attorey's office. "She's a courageous woman," said Robert Quinllvan, an assistant state's attorney.

"Although riddled with fear, she testified." MISS THOMAS was walking by April Margaret c. DRAPER BRUNDAGE Urge limiting sales of liquor to youths mit persons at age 19 and over to obtain wine and beer from taverns and liquor stores. Joyce's amendment would still allow 19 and 20-year-olds to drink wine and beer in taverns but would not allow them to take such beverages out of the establishment. It also would wine and beer sales from package liquor stores to persons under 21, he said. 1 THE ALDERMAN SAID he would prefer to restore a complete ban on drinking by persons under 21, as under the former state law, but does not think he could muster enough council support for the more stringent prohibition. By Robert Davis A CHICAGO ALDERMAN is confident that his ordinance amendment banning carryouts of wine and beer by persons under 21 will be passed by the city council within a month.

Aid. Jeremiah Joyce 19th said Sunday that he already has 21 co-sponsors for his amendment and expects to have at least 26, a council majority, before hearings are held by the council's Police and Fire Committee later this month.
