Culver J. Kennedy, Sears, Roebuck Co. vice president for Midwest territory, died Wednesday while on a business trip to Jasper, Ind. Mr. Kennedy, 62, of 1035 Seminole Wilmette, a 40-year veteran of the Chicagobased company.

From his headquarters in Skokie he directed retail and catalog operations in 11 Midwestern states. He had Kennedy, dies planned to retire in January. A member of the Chicago Club, Sunset Ridge Club, and the Metropolitan Club, Mr. Kennedy was also a director of the United Charities of Chicago, the Chicago Boys and Chicago Crime Commission. He is survived by his widow, Grace; a daughter, Judith K.

Lee; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were pending. 3d Downers Grove blast victim identified. THE THIRD person killed in an explosion and fire which leveled a three-story apartment building at 2135 Prentiss Downers Grove, Tuesday was identified Wednesday, as investigators sought to determine the cause of the blast. Police identified the victim as Richard R.

Nickels, 23, who lived in a first-floor apartment in the 11-apartment building. The other two dead were identified as Richard J. McDowell, 72, and his wife, Harriet, 76, who occupied a second floor apartment. Rescue workers pulled the three bodies from the wreckage. Eight persons were injured and treated at hospitals.

None apparently suffered major injuries. A DOWNERS Grove Fire Department official said investigators returned to the building site Wednesday in a search for clues to the blast, which was believed to have been set off in the laundry and furnace room. Two other buildings, with 12 apartments each, flanked the demolished building. Living faith By Harold Blake Walker AFTER THE STONING death of Stephen in Jerusalem, the Christian community, under persecution, was scattered far and wide. The Holy City was untenable a center for the new faith, and those who were followers of Christ abandoned the city for a time.

The Book of the Acts reports laconically, "Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word." Notice, if you will, that the scattering of the Christians was not a voluntary choice on their part. Flight from Jerusalem was a necessity because the city authorities were bent on the new faith's destruction. The Christians had no wish to abandon their homes and their work, but if they were prevented from teaching and preaching in the Holy City, they would take their faith to more hospitable locations. IT IS SAFE to say that most of us meet frustrations that require us to make adjustments that are not voluntary choices. They are demanded by circumstances.

Back in 1962 when John Glenn was waiting to venture into space, the blast-off was delayed several times. The delays were not Glenn's choices; they were imposed upon him by factors beyond his control. Dr. Robert Voss, a psychologist who was training officer for the astronauts at the time, noted that Glenn was "remarkably able to bear frustration." Bearing frustration with poise and confidence is a mark of spiritual maturity. It is the result of a deep and abiding trust in the providence of God.

When we necessarily face situations, not of our own choosing, that thwart our aims and objectives, grant us, God, a deeper trust in Thee and in the guidance of Thy Spirit. Amen.
