H.izclliurst, Wis. 546.U BROCHURE AND MISSOURI aH jxvyjzsk the Wisconsin a might have set in again in many parts of the land. Let's face it, this has been a freak season. Snowfall has been xceptionally good everywhere; in northern New England they've had the greatest accumulation in this century, and it looks as tho they'll have skiing up there all thru April. Next winter, tho, resort operators might be weeping all over their snow machines again, and you'll want to know about Alta, where snow machines are about as necessary as rock crushing devices in North Africa to make more sand for the Sahara.

Rates at Alta Lodge, by the way, range all the way from $30 a day, double, Modified American Plan, for a small room with adjacent shower in the older Main Building up to $54 for a large room with private balcony and fireplace in the new wings. There are also dormitory accommodations at $13.50 a person. A 15 per cent service charge is added in lieu of tipping, and here the policy really works. Alta will have a new rival about a mile away when the first units of the huge Snowbird ski development opens this coming November. The Snowbird Lodge will include 160 condominium and rental apartments, together with four restaurants and 12 shops; and also opening will be the aerial tramway, three double chair lifts and a beginner tow.

Total uphill capacity when Snowbird opens will be 4,600 skiers an hour, and the terrain features more than 3,000 feet of vertical rise one of the few American ski areas of this size. On your way to and from the mountains, you'll have a chance to look over Salt Lake City not exactly Swingsville, but an interesting place to visit nevertheless. Almost half of Utah's million people live in the valley around the capital. Salt Lake City's air traffic was stepped up considerably last fall when American Airlines introduced nonstop service from New York and from Chicago, and one-stop service from Washington and Detroit via Chicago. Salt Lake City is the international headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and much of its history and most of its attractions are associated with Mormonism.

Heart of town is the Mormon Temple Square with its granite temple and its domed tabernacle, where the famed Tabernacle Choir, more than a century old, gives its concerts. There's also an interesting Mormon Museum in Temple Square and a pioneer's cabin that was moved in from the countryside and set up in a fenced-in corner of the square. But the top attraction, for me at least, was the Beehive House, built in 1854 as the home of Brigham Young, head of the Mormon Church, first governor of the Utah WISCONSIN family Sturgeon Bay. Fearing that the long threatened invasion by Hanoi of these Wasatch Mountains had come at last, I rushed to the phone. "Dread not, dear guest," the operator assured me, "It is but the snow rangers firing their cannon at these nearby slopes. "They're making avalanches." Aval anches they need aronud here like San Francisco needs earthquakes. As a matter ot fact it was a snow slide blocking the. highway that has kept us here an unscheduled 24 hours extra.

But as it turned out, the snow rangers really were doing something useful. Whenever they fear the possibility of avalanches after a heavy snowfall or during a sudden thaw they clear everybody out of the area and blast away at the overhanging mountainsides with 75 mm. recoilless rifles or they plant dynamite charges afoot or by plane. If the explosions set off snow slides, fine, everybody is safely tucked away and the rangers can cope with the situation. But if nothing happens, that's even better.

Then the rangers know that the area is safe; the roads can be opened, the skiers can come out of their lodges and the ski lifts can be started up again. I couldn't have chosen a happier place to be snowed-in at than this Alta Lodge where I am right now. It's a big rambling and it has achieved something of an architectural triumph by managing to combine steel girder and glass construction in its new wings with the warm intimate atmosphere of wood paneling and stone fireplaces you hope to find in a ski lodge. And the food here is something you seldom find in a ski resort. You do in Europe once in awhile, but only very rarely here at home.

It's so good, in fact, that the lodge does a big restaurant business in the spring, when Salt Lake City people like Jo make the 40-minute drive to see the mountain wild flowers, in the summer when they seek a bit of coolth and in the fall when they come up to catch the foliage show. Whatever the time of year, scenery here in the heart of the Wasatch National Forest is nolhing short of fabulous. Altho Alta Lodge is a place for all seasons, it's famed mainly as a ski resort because here climate and topography have combined to give the Alta area just about the greatest amount of powder snow to be found anywhere in North America. They shut down the ski lifts here on May 2, not because they run out of snow there's generally about a 15-foot base at the end of May but because they run out of skiers. By that time local people have had a good six months of skiing, and what they're interested in is golf and tennis and water skiing on the Great Salt Lake.

Snow conditions are generally excellent thru May, and as a sort of a stunt they hold ski races every Fourth of July up on the top slopes. Maybe it seems strange, talking about skiing this late in the season, but clip and file this for next winter because by next year the ski drought MISSOURI GO OZARKS IN 1971 Fish, vocation or retire In the wonderland of the Wo. -Ark, Ozarks.
