He started with the firm at the age of 14 as an office boy and assistantelevator operator. and then Su- f- perior court, i yesterday in his home at 8807 Harper av. He had com-plained of stomach and chest pains after a walk Sunday night, and he awak Judge Hartlgan ened complaining of similar pains shortly before 3:30 a. m. He was sitting in a chair, talking to his wife, Irene, when he collapsed and died.

Reelected in 1958 Judge Hartigan was elected to Municipal court in 1924 and served there 28 years, longer than anyone in the history of the court, before he was elected to Superior court in 1952. He was reelected in 1958. While a Superior court judge, he also served briefly in Criminal court. A native Chicagoan, and onetime newsboy and Western Union messenger boy, he worked his way thru Chicago Kent College of Law. He was graduated from law school and admitted to the bar in 1915, and practiced both criminal and civil law before being elected to Municipal court.

Before he got his law degree, he worked YLVz years for Western Union and two years for a bank. He was a World War I veteran. Respected by Bar Mayor jJaley described Harti gan as a distinguished jurist who was respecteu by the oar and by those who appeared before him in court. Surviving besides his widow, are two sons, Matthew Jr. and John a daughter, Mary Irene; a brother, a sister, and four grandchildren.

Channing H. Tobias, 79, nationally known Negro leader and militant anti-segregationist, died yesterday in Harkness Pavilion of Columbia Presbyterian medical center. Records of the House committee on un-American activities showed that Tobias had been a member of nine communist front organizations and he was identified by counsel for another House committee as having belonged to 48 communist front groups. Tobias served on the boards of foundations, includ ing the Field Foundation and the Phelps-Stokes Fund, was on President Truman's committee on civil rights, and was chairman emeritus of the board of directors of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He also devoted many years to the Y.

Ready, 76, vice president of the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, died today in his sleep in his suite in the Croydon hotel. First associated with the Waldorf-Astoria as resident manager in 1931, just before its Park avenue location was opened, Ready rose in 14 years to the presidency of the corporation. He was president until October 1949, when the Hilton interests took over the hotel.
