Chicago Tribune, Saturday, August 19, 1978 Section 1C, 1 (ADVERTISEMENT) (ADVERTISEMENT) (ADVERTISEMENT) (ADVERTISEMENT) Oriental Elegance Plus Superb Cuisine! BO NEW MOON I 1H RANT Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) at Kedzie, Olympia Fields This is New Moon House in Olympia Fields, where you'll enjoy fine Cantonese cuisine by Sally McCormlck Don Lu is a restaurateur who spares no expense to make his Chinese restaurants among the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Don started out with a take-out store in Munster, Indiana 14 years ago, and gradually, year by year he opened his three highly successful restaurants at 8250 Calumet Avenue in Munster, on Route 30 and 1-65 in Merrillville, Indiana and here in Olympia Fields. Each restaurant has a different theme, all are unique in design. The beautiful New Moon House in Olympia Fields has a bright red and green exterior that resembles a Chinese pagoda with Chinese figures on one wall depicting the harvest season. Enter through the bright red Happiness Door, (the Chinese say once you touch the door you'll have much happiness in life), through the golden arched Moon Gate and into the colorful dining room.

The main attraction in the room is the ceiling-high hand carved wooden dragon that took six artisans four months to carve from a solid piece of wood. The impressive dragon is completely covered in 18 kt. gold leaf. It's really something to see. Red and gold predominate in the two dining rooms and lounge.

There are beautiful hand made artifacts from Hong Kong and China. The ornate gold ceiling and the gold filigree panels that separate the dining room from the lounge add rich touches. Chinese lanterns light the rooms, colorful dragons dot the walls. We dined with manager Steve Loo, a personable man who is always around to greet and seat guests. We let Steve do the ordering for us, and what a sumptuous meal we had.

We started with one of the many exotic tropical drinks served here. You'll find Mai Tai, Pineapple Passion, Zombie and many more to choose from. With our drinks we enjoyed crisp fried wonton, jumbo fried shrimp, barbecued ribs and crunchy, delicious egg rolls. Following the appetizers we had wonton soup, a chicken base soup with green onions and noodles. We had two delicious entrees, Steak Kow, beef tenderloin balls with peapods, mushrooms, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots and Chinese greens, and the Chef's Special Chicken, breaded white meat with peapods and water chestnuts.

With this we were served a piping hot pot of Chinese tea! If you're in doubt about what to order Steve Loo will be happy to make suggestions. There are so many interesting entrees on the big menu, It's hard to select and recommend a few. All entrees are served with egg drop soup and rice. Pork selections feature sweet and sour breaded pork tenderloin. Char Sue Kow, barbecued pork with mushrooms, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, peapods and Chinese greens and Char Sue Chow Mein, pan fried soft noodles with barbecued pork and Chinese vegetables.

There are many excellent chicken and poultry dishes, such as Almond Duck, boned and flavored with sweet and sour sauce, Kung Po chicken, spicy white meat with diced vegetables and cashew nuts and chicken pineapple to mention a few. Chef's suggestions feature Oriental Hot Pot for two, assorted egg rolls, shrimp toast, barbecued ribs, skewered beef Saday and sesame chicken served in a flaming hot pot. Really good! You'll also enjoy New Moon Delight, a combination of chicken, shrimp and barbecued pork with vegetables and topped with crispy rice noodles. There are a lot of succulent seafood dishes, among them lobster with garlic sauce and black bean sauce, shrimp with peapods and onions in oyster sauce and shrimp and green pepper and tomatoes. You'll enjoy a number of beef entrees such as Hongkong Steak, beef with peapods and onions and beef Chow Mein Cantonese to mention a few.

For parties of two or more there are deluxe dinner combinations. For instance a party of four would be served egg roll, fried shrimp, barbecued ribs, wonton soup, sweet and sour shrimp, Chef's special chicken, New Moon Delight, Kung Po beef, fried rice and dessert! Quite an assortment of fine Chinese dishes. There are family dinners that feature similar menus for parties of two or more. The luncheon menu has specials Monday through Friday. There are combination plates such as egg'foo young with chop suey and fried rice, a variety of chop suey and chow mein, plus such favorite entrees as Peking chicken.

Oriental steak, shrimp and lobster sauce and many more. Lunch is served from 11:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings you'll enjoy the beautiful organ music of Terry Ivo. He plays from 7 to 10:30 pm on Friday and Saturday and on Sundays from 5:30 to 9 pm. The New Moon restaurants are open from 11:30 a.m.

to 11 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, Friday and Saturday until midnight and Sundays from 11:30 to 10 p.m. All restaurants accept American Express, Master Charge and Diner's credit cards. For weekend reservations at Olympia Fields call 312-747-1080. The New Moon restaurants have a carryout service.

Just order off the regular menu and take your Oriental dinner home piping hot. The carryout is open all day. In addition to carryouts. the restaurants have an excellent caterine service to serve from 20 to 200 guests. The food is packaged in buffet heating containers that are easy to serve and handle? If you're having a special at-home or in-office party just call the New Moon and they'll be happy to arrange your menu.

To reach the New Moon in Olympia Fields take 1-57 off the Dan Ryan east to Route 30. The New Moon is the fourth stop light on Route 30.
