I API Jo Ann Yellow Bird, an Indian activist who won civil rights judgment against the city of Gordon, a year ago, apparently poisoned herself with strychnine, authorities said Wednesday. "But how or why is beyond me," said David Clegg of Scottsbluff, one of the lawyers who represented the Oglala Sioux in her successful suit last summer.

"We know from her how difficult life is for a young Indian woman," said Jennie Rhine of the San Francisco area, another of Mrs. Yellow Bird's lawyers. API Veteran gaming figure Major Riddle, who parlayed an investment in a struggling Las Vegas hotel into ownership of four casinos, has died at the age of 73. Riddle, a Texas oilman who began his Nevada gaming career in 1956, died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after a lengthy illness. The specific cause of death was jiot disclosed, but Riddle had contracted pneumonia that was complicated by a blood disease. A District Court judge on Monday named his wife, Marion, as guardian of the properties. Riddle's death was announced in his casinos, and employes were asked to observe a moment of silence. Riddle, born in Louisville, was active in oil and gas ventures in Texas before going into the casino business. He operated the Riddle Oil Drilling Co.
