off tho classical sound By Kenan Heise SERVICES FOR Edytte DufMi 90, the last person to live on the fabled Edith Rockefeller McCormick estate in Lake Forest, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at 1571 Maple Evanston. Mrs. Dunford, an Evanston resident, died there Thursday in St Francis Hospital. Her husband, John, was superintendent of buildings and grounds at Villa Turicum, the Lake Forest estate, until his death in 1948.

Mrs. Dunford, a native of Chicago, went to live in the rooms above the garage at Villa Turicum after her marriage. Her father-in-law, who had come to Chicago from England to be coachman for Marshall Field, became caretaker of the McCormick estate in 1912, six years after Field died. Edith McCormick was the daughter of John D. Rockefeller.

She and her husband, Harold, built the 40- room mansion in Lake Forest in 1911, but then seldom visited it Barrels of French china were left unpacked for more than 90 years as the McCormicki went their own ways. He took up opera and flying, and she studied psychology under Carl Jung in Switzerland. Mrs. Dunford's husband also went off to Europe, but it was to World War I in France, where he was wounded three times and gassed. He received the Croix de Guerre, a French military decoration for bravery, and a divisional citation.

In 1943, the elder Mr. Dunford died. His son, an employee on the property since 1912, nad replaced him as superintendent of Villa Turicum in 1934. The couple lived there' until he died on the estate in 1948. She left after his death, and the estate was abandoned until it was subdivided in recent years.

Mrs. Dunford left no immediate survivors. John Von Rhoin, Evetya S. NeaJ Private services will be held for Evelyn S. Neal, 76, who died Thursday St Joseph Hospital.

Mrs. Neal was a retired elementary school teacher and also had taught homebound physically handicapped students on the South Side. She was a teacher for 42 years. Born in Chicago, she was a longtime resident of the South Side. Mrs.

Neal was the widow of Judge Earl J. Neal. She is survived by a son, Earl chairman of the board of First Federal of Chicago; a grandson; and a sister. Edgar M. AOiaa Edgar M.

Allina, 79, of West Rogers Park, died Friday in Swedish Covenant Hospital. Mr. Allina was president of Allin's Paint and Wall Coverings, 4839 N. Western Ave. He is survived by his wife, Minnie; a son, Armand; two daughters.

Lauretta Nagatomo and Bilfie; and six grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel at 5206 Broadway. Bayla J. Gersbowlts Services for Bayla J.

Gershowitz, 44, of Oak Brook, a member of the Oak Brook Board of Education, will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in Oak Park Temple, 1235 N. Harlem Oak Park. Mrs. Gershowitz died Thursday in Hinsdale Hospital.

She had been serving her second term on the board. She and her husband, Harold vice president of Waste Management Inc. of Oak Brook, founded the National Capital Tay-. Sachs Foundation, responsible for developing the first screening process to detect Tay-Sachs disease. Tay-Sachs is a fatal genetic illness found predominantly among infants born of East' European Jewish parents.

In I960 Mrs. Gershowitz was named Woman of the Year for the western suburbs by ORT, a charitable organization. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Michael; a daughter, Amy Lynn; her parents, Benjamin and Mildred Goodman; and a sister. Lukas Eisler Mass for Lukas Eisler, 81, a retired Janitor, will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St.

Martha Catholic Church, 8523 Georgiana Morton Grove. Mr. Eisler, a resident of Morton Grove, died Thursday in Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge. He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons, Frederick and Robert; a daughter, Pauline McNamara; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother. Dr.

Anthony J. Kudima Services for Dr. Anthony J. Kudzma, 65, who had been associated with Central Stickney Memorial Health Center, Stickney, for many years, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at 1424 50th Critic Concertos.

Roach, 76; retired as pipefitter, took to stage a physician, died Thursday in a South Side nursing home. Dr. Hem-mens maintained a practice for 30 years at 111th Street and Fairfield Avenue.

She served her residency at Little Company of Mary Evergreen Park, and remained on the staff there throughout her ca-' reer. Dr. Hemmens is survived by a sister. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 110th Street and Hoyne Avenue.

Fraak M. Baaich Mass for Frank M. Banich, 76, a retired plumber in the city Water-Department, will be said at 10 a.m.; Monday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, 1852 W. 22d PL Mr.

Banich. a Near Southwest Side resident, died Thursday in St Anne's Hospital. He was a past president of the American Slovenian Club and former chairman of the Marquette District of the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Dr. Fran-; cis and Dr.

Terence; a Mary Ann Ovnik; and nine' grandchildren. Rita F. Lackweod Mass for Rita F. Lockwood, 53, of Evanston, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St.

Nicholas Catholic Church, 806 Ridge in the suburb. Mrs. Lockwood, a registered nurse, died Thursday in St. Francis Hospital, Evanston. She is survived by tier husband, James four, sons, Thomas, James, John and Don- aid; two daughters, Mary Trednich and Karen; a granddaughter; her father, Henry Dwttrich; a brother; and a sister.

Chieko Hata Services for Chieko Hata, 69, an assistant to the executive director of Chicago Planned Parenthood from' 1952 until her retirement in 1981, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at 1460 Sherman Evanston. Mrs. Hata, who died Wednesday at home in Evanston, was honored when a Planned Parenthood clinic in Westchester was named for her. She is survived by two brothers and a sister.

Helen Catherine Grselak Mass for Helen Catherine Grzelak, 66, of the Northwest Side, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 5205 N. Lieb Ave. Mrs.

Grzelak died Thursday in Loyola University Medical Center, near Maywood. She is survived by her husband, Joseph; a son, Jack; a daughter, Dolores Steed: five grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters. AFTER RETIRING as a pipefitter for the Chicago Park District, James M. Roach, 76, took up acting and became part of the Free Street Theatre Too acting troupe. Mass for Mr.

Roach, of the Beverly area, will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 10134 S. Longwood Dr. He died Wednesday at home.

A native of the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Mr. Roach worked for 37 years at Garfield Park. He was a member for 60 years of Pipefitters Local 597. "After he retired," said his wife, Adele, "he seemed to have time hanging heavy on his hands. He didrTt like that.

Roach appeared together in that play ana also in a revival of the 1932 play "The Cradle Will Rock." "He was a terrific comedian," Mrs. Roach said. "Usually he played a very fatherly role." In addition to his wife, Mr. Roach is survived by three sons, James William and Robert; a daughter, Sheila Zimmer; and six grandchildren. When Mr. Jaeeer came to southern California from Nebraska in 1906, he intended to be a physician, but his curiosity about the outdoors led him to study botany and biology. He became what colleagues called an old-time field scientist. He combined botany, zoology, and a fascination with the California desert before specialization of study became widespread. He began a 30-year teaching career at Riverside College in 1922 and continued his weekend and vacation valev, true son of the Communist' Party and the Soviet people, will always remain in our hearts," it said.

Mr. Kovalev was born in 1930 in a village in the Kaluga region of the' Russian Republic. He was a Communist Party member since 1956 and worked in the party hierarchy front 1959 to 1978, the obituary said. He went to Bolivia as ambassador in 1981. By 1951, he was satisfied that some birds hibernate during winter.

He published the findings two years later in National Geographic magazine, and this brought him to the forefront of desert science. Mr. Jaeger, the author of several books on mountain and desert wildlife, died Tuesday in his house, which is surrounded by many rare desert plants he discovered. He had lived there 40 years. NATHENSON Rose A.
