The British per industry is still in financial difficulties because of rising costs, mainly for newsprint.

But a statement by Sir Denis Hamilton, chairman and editor-in-chief of Times Newspapers Limited, emphasized there will be "no change" at the paper. The value of Lord Thomson's world wide interests has been put at $300 million. His personal fortune has been estimated at $36 million. In 1959 he took over the Kemsley newspaper group, the largest in Britain, with the help of his income from North American newspapers. His biggest satisfaction was in taking over the Times, Britain's oldest major newspaper.

Hearing in Toronto that an approach might be successful, he returned to London, opened secret negotiations, and signed the deal. "This is the biggest thrill of my life my cup is running over," he said. Lord Thomson always gave his editors total freedom. His main interest was in the business side, as befits a man whose entry in "Who's Who" included among his hobbies "reading balance sheets." In a recent interview he said, "I've done things for the Times I wouldn't do for any other paper or any other business. But I think the Times is part of Britain.

In many parts of the world, it is Britain." Community College. Surviving are his widow, Anita; four daughters, Mrs. Pamela Wuellner, Mrs. Moira Rebeck, Monica, and Margaret; four sons, Michael, Dennis, Patrick, and Kevin; a brother; and five grandchildren. Mrs.

LONDON Renters Lord Thomson of Fleet, the self-made Canadian-born publisher who built the world's largest newspaper empire, died Wednesday in a London hospital.

He was 82. Lord Thompson developed a chest infection a month ago after a cold and severe stroke. One of the last of Britain's "press lords," the first Baron Thomson of Fleet was a businessman for whom success came in the second half of life. "I hadn't made much progress by 50," he said once. "I made more money between 65 and 70 than in the first 65 years of my life." His wheeler-dealer talent and keen eve for profit first beean to show when he was a radio salesman in Canada In the 1930s.

After acquiring a chain of small Canadian newspapers, he crossed to Britain ih 1953 and conquered Fleet Street, home of the British national newspaper industry. AT THE SAME time, he began picking up ailing newspapers around the globe and turning most of them into profit-makers. The Thomson empire includes 148 newspapers and 138 magazines and extends to the United States, Africa, Australia, and the West Indies. Lord Thomson regarded his greatest coup as acquisition in 1966 of the Times of London, a British institution of immense prestige but, in recent years, of weak finances. To sustain the Times, Lord Thomson poured in several million dollars from his personal wealth.

The Times, the London Sunday Times, and the rest of the vast Thomson organizationwith its assorted media, vacation, North Sea oil, and other commercial activities now go to his son, Kenneth, 52, who has been the group's joint chairman. KENNETH, a man less extroverted than his go-getting father, also succeeds to the hereditary barony.
