K. Scheel, manager of Niles Rick Anderson R. Anderson; had 2 heart transplants KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) nick Anderson, who underwent two heart transplants in a battle against a degenerative heart disease, has died at age 30. Mr.

Anderson's fight began in 1973, when he suffered a heart attack at age 20. His condition worsened during the next four years, and in 1977 doctors diagnosed: his problem as cardiomyopathy, which rendered up to 92 percent of his heart useless. After several hospitals in the United States refused to attempt the operation for various reasons, Mr. Anderson traveled to South Africa, where he underwent heart transplants in 1979 and 1980 led by Dr. Christiaan Barnard.

Mr. Anderson's body rejected the donated organs. THE TRANSPLANTS were of the "piggyback" variety, in which the donor heart is attached to the patient's heart to assist, rather than replace it. Mr. Anderson's doctors had ruled out a third trip to South Africa because he was too weak.

At the time of his death Thursday, Mr. Anderson was undergoing tests in hopes of a third transplant attempt, according to his father, Archie Anderson.
